Nintendo has confirmed the Wii successor console is well underway, but will not talk about it at all for fear of it being ripped off.
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwada confirmed that a successor to its wildly successful Wii console is under development – however, he refuses to part with any details out of fear that the competition will swipe the idea:

“Unfortunately, the history of entertainment is also the history of imitation.
If a superb idea comes out, and it’s something you can’t protect with a patent, it will be copied immediately.”

He goes on to talk about the importance of “surprising” consumers – this and his secretiveness seem to suggest the successor may be more than just a Wii with upgraded hardware.

Previously Nintendo has been keen to point out that the Move and Kinect are mere copies of its Wiimote however this is clearly false as they are really copies of the Power Glove, buy considering that thing was ****e then they are copies of the eyetoy.

Nintendo have never done badly even with console that were not the market leaders. The problem is if a new HD wii is releases who would buy it, the wii has saturated the casual market and if the sales of the move and natal don't do well why would a new wii, the DS has been redesigned but that is a hand held and different. If the new console is similar to the 360 and ps3 and matches or surpasses their power then 3rd party developers won't uses that extra power when making multiple platform games, the games will mostly be from Nintendo, the new wii will have to be substantially different to succeed.

I'm thinking with the money they made from the Wii, they may use it to go to the other end of the market, and try to go towards the gaming market? Anything else would hurt the Wii, imo, or the popularity of the Wii would hurt it.

Yes i agree and said that later on, but with the 360 and ps3 around for a good few year more even a more powerful console from Nintendo would be against the 360 and the ps3 with both having large numbers of first party hardcore and mainstream game developers and third party. Nintendo will have a rough fight on going back from the casual games.

My biggest fear is that they've dug themselves into a hole they wont be able to come out of with the Wiimote. They went from a normal, wired controller to a motioned sensored wand with the Wii. What's next? No controller at all and just use your body movements ala Kinect? This would end up being another casual gamer move and I really hope they don't end up going down this route as the Wiimote was bad enough IMO. Bring back the Wavebird and let us play Zelda the way it should be played.
