I see from the Bus Eireann website that new timetables are being introduced on the Dublin/Galway route 20 from August 15th that will see six services from Dublin and seven from Galway become X20 services, with limited stops at Dublin Airport, Athlone, Ballinasloe and Loughrea.

The new timetable is here http://www.buseireann.ie/pdf/1281351874-20.pdf

Interesting that the X20 buses start out in Dublin City and then go to the Airport before heading towards Galway.

Obviously Go Bus and City Link will still be a lot faster for Dublin City - Galway journeys as they start at the Airport, go into the City (Port Tunnel) and then non-stop to Galway. When I have used Go Bus and City Link recently, it has taken roughly 2 hrs 20 mins to go from Galway to Dublin City; that is between 40 mins and 1 hour faster than BE.

Bus Eireann will at least match (or possibly beat slightly) Go Bus and City Link on Dublin Airport-Galway journey times with the X20 services.

Just as a matter of interest with the frequency of Go Bus and the ability to drop off at Heuston within 2 hours 20 minutes and fares of 10 euro single how is the train doing these days with fares ranging from

    http://www.irishrail.ie/your_ticket/fares_enquiries.asp#intercity

34.50 to 48.00 for an adult single; 5 day and monthly returns at 48 euro (24 per leg) and travel times of 2 hours 45 minutes Galway - Heuston. Ok there are web promotions but you need to seek them out book them and plan - Go Bus is turn up and go for ten euro and is nearly half an hour faster.

Is there anyone on the trains at the moment??? Its mind boggling what the M6 has done to journey times and the prices the bus companies are charging cf the trains.

In fairness, the Dublin-Galway bus serves routings and destination the Dublin-Galway train does not, such as Enfield, Moate and Loughrea. The first two would be covered in the unlikely event Mullingar-Athlone reopened but there's no chance of seeing trains in Loughrea.

I delighted to see some non stop service to Athlone from Dublin. I think in fairness there was enough buses serving the N4/N6 corridor. I wonder will the same come to the Dublin-Limerick bus with the first stop in Portlaoise-Roscrea-Nenagh-Limerick.

Having used route 12 and 20 quite frequently this year I think the limited stops thing is about right. I know there'll be arguments about having rural towns transport links cut off but imo having 2/3 services out of x number a day would suffice for smaller towns and villages.

The same should be done on the waterford route with the first stop being carlow. And have two busses a day morning and evening servicing the smaller villages.

Exactly. The new roads are built so lets the expressway services take advantage of them. I hope to see the same with the Sligo and Ballinaservices that pass through Mullingar I know there is a service that passes through the M4 toolbridge around 6;15pm is the 17;10 ex Longford non stop to Dublin arriving 2hrs later no bad considering there is only Dualcarriageway from Mullingar.
Foggy Lad you are praying that they introduce this service to Waterford so you will be home earlier!!!!! You can mock me if you like I read your posts about the clapped out coach that you took home one evening

Yes I want to get home earlier but also it will save bus eireann money as stopping or driving through kilcullen and castledermot every time is crazy, why should the tiny villages have the same level of service as larger towns and cities especially when there is rarely anyone waiting to be picked up or dropped off.

If you wanted to kill the last possible justification for Dublin-Ballybrophy-Limerick, that might just do it.

The train to Limerick via nenagh is a poor service and needs some major upgrading. The railcar used for it would be better served in Dublin/Cork suburban service

    +1000

Citylink (while useful for the late buses etc) 2 hour journeys from Athlone are a balls at the best of times. Looking forward to using this new service - save me having to consider using the car for a speedy trip to airport.

    Aaaaay! :D

Good point Kev. Ah thats crap. All the cheapo Ryanair flights are early morn.

Still at least it beats the traffic for the daytime flights. And i dont think Bus Eireann have a license for a round the clock service so cant really be helped

    :(

Gobus has a 1.45am from Galway that arrives in to Dublin Airport at 4.15 along with departures at 03:45 05:45 06:45 which take 3hr 15 min, a little longer but least they are going to suit people on early flights.

It's not a problem at all for people from Galway (Go Bus and City Link); veryangryman mentioned that he was glad to get a non-stop service to Dublin Airport from Athlone for the first time. But unfortunately these new BE services aren't actually timetabled that well to meet many departing flights.

Bizarrely enough last time I checked there are still plenty of flights leaving Dublin Airport during the daytime!!! But yes they could do with some overnight services - maybe they were not allowed?

Serving Ballinasloe is ok I guess but serving Loughrea is dumb as its so far offline and reeks of toll dodging.

    Gobus and Citylink still win.

Would you believe I have never used bus eireann before for the longer journeys!Does anyone know is there free wifi and toilets on board for the Galway to Dublin airport trip?:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,373 ✭✭✭✭foggy_lad

No toilets or wifi on any bus eireann services except on their eurolines coaches which have toilets.

WiFi is being installed in the fleet at present, a number of the coaches on Dublin-Galway are already equipped.

like their colleagues in irish rail they are always playing catch-up, private operators have had WiFi across their fleets for years.
