Dublin Airport - Do they have an ambulance station?

    Hey all,

Would anyone be able to tell me what way Dublin Airport is broken down in regards to their emergency vehicles?

Would like to photograph them. Just got off the phone with the Airport Police who gave me a name of a person I should send a letter off to, to ask permission. However, I want to try and ensure I don't ask to photograph Police cars, and then when I get there, find out that they have a whole host of other stuff that I can't go near because I never asked.

So I was wondering, does anyone know the breakdown of the emergency services in the Airport?

They obviously have police. As far as I am aware they also have a Fire Station (though it has no contact details, only the Police seem to have contact details). I am unsure whether or not they have an ambulance service (though I would assume the Fire station has it's own ambulance or two, like Dublin Fire Brigade?)

    Does anyone know for sure?

    Cheers :)

Airport Police FireService are under the remit of the DAA.

The APFS role definition used to cover both ie, rotate between the airport Police duties and then firestation duties.

Since 2006 the Firestation was seperated from the main airport police role.

Yes the airport have an ambulance which comes under the authority of the Chief Fire Officer.

The Airport Fire station is located airside so there is no possible way you will be allowed tophotograph unless you know someone senior in DAA or Firestation.

You would have to have a security/Police clearance anyway and that process could take up to 5/6 weeks.

Maybe contact PR department at DAA.

    Cheers kravmaga.

Currently typing up a letter. Airport police gave me a PR address to send the letter to.

I'm aware Airport security overly strict these days, so I'm not holding my breath. Would be pretty nice though, so I may aswell chance my arm and see what happens.

Best thing to do is ring the Airport Fire Station, number is 01 844343 and ask to speak to the Station Officer on duty and ask him about a possible visit, not sure about taking photographs but if you want a taste of what they have, check out irishfireservices.ie or blues-twos.com,plenty of photographs of the Airport Fire Service between the two of them.

It is possible to photograph the appliances there. A number of collegues of mine have done so inside the past few months without too many problems. You will have to go through a few hoops to so buts its worth it. I have personnally photographed all APFS vehilces in Cork, Shannon, Kerry & Knock with any issue and Im planning a trip to Waterford as I speak (type). Best thing to do is to ask very nicely and be sure to please and thanks also.

I hope you meant to write not too many problems? :P

I've typed up a quick letter. Will post it in the moaning. Hopefully will hear something back from them. I don't mind if they take their time with it, but I hate when people just don't reply :(

Fair play to you for getting photos of Cork, Shannon etc. so far man. I assume once you've got one set done, you can use those images to help you get into the next place and so on?

Was considering firing in a few prints of Garda/Ambulance/Fire photos I've taken around Drogheda. Dunno if that'd work for or against me though.

Cheers for the information there, Alpha. You sound like you know your stuff. Not too familiar with the area, is it actually possible to walk from one station to the other? Are the Police cars actually on the go a lot?

Admittedly, I don't know much about the work of Airport Police/Fire, but I would have assumed their vehicles are stationary for the majority of the time.

No its not possible to walk. APS are the same as any gardai station really you could get lucky and some of the vehicles could be parked up. Theres always something goin on as its an airport with units out on calls or patrols it really hard to say cause every day is different. Fire station would be more stationary with exception of airfield patrols, friction testing, bird scaring duties, ambulance runs or fire cover for when aircraft are fueling with persons on board etc..

You should visit the Airport Police station on the day and speak to someone in the public office or ask speak to the sergeant thats on and explain your reason why your there and there should be no problem. Dog Unit is seperate operational support unit and is located in a seperate base which is else where again on the campus.

Yes so i believe, alot of bigger airports have smaller satelite stations due to number of runways they operate.

Hmm.. Are they both accessible via the airport? For example, If I go to the airport, can I get to both the Fire and Police Stations?

If not, how would I actually go about moving from one to the other? I would have assumed that both are located on the Airport's runway area (not on the actual runway, obviously, but you know what I'm trying to say)?

So, out of curiousity, how many stations are there at the airport? Considering it's an airport, I assume they have some kind of bomb squad, too? (or would the Army deal with such threats or issues?).

I know the Airport is big, and I don't mind spending hours walking around, but I plan to get a bus up and wouldn't like to have to start travelling away from the airport and then back to it and such in order to reach the different stations.

Ah .... so Heathrow or Frankfurt might have 2 or 3 stations as opposed to the 1 in Dublin ?

Yes i think so but could be wrong, some big airport have small three tender satelite stations but DUB is planning a second satelite station for when 2nd runway opens.

with all due respect to the great services that the DFB provide......... is PHECC not the licensing authority for paramedics?

Yes they are. I assume AP means that they are trained by DFBs O Brien Institute which are a PHECC recognised training institute to Advanced Paramedic Level (Well combined with RCSi)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe there are APs in the AFS, a few were selected for Paramedic training a few years back and they've an EMT or two but that's it in terms of PHECC practitioners.

Sorry I wasnt stating they had them.....I was stating the OBI can instruct to AP level.....

    Hey Elessar/Muas

Yes NGA assumed correct, the AFRS have a number of qualified full time paramedics that trained in the OBI with the DFB to same standard as deployed on normal DFB ambulance. There are no Advanced Paramedic's currently in the AFRS.

Other members of the Airport Police Service and Airport Fire & Rescue are trained to EFR level recognised by PHECC.

How many paramedics do they have? I know also one man who works there is an EMT.

Fire Station is based on the westlands basically the opposite side of the airport to the passenger terminals close to the boot inn pub.

The Airport Police operate primarily from Police station located on the arrivals road of Terminal 1. Does what it says on the tin same as any police station really.

The Airport Police Dog Unit Base is located within the grounds Castlemoate House training centre.

Not really the place to discuss security issues like that mate on an open site but yes, APS are first responders along with there colleagues in the AGS to such incidents should they arise.

Like i said best thing is to speak to Police on the day and if your not driving maybe get a taxi to the fire station if you get approval to visit once your finished with the police.

just a question for you Alpha papa, do the airport still do runs to the hospital with patients these day considering it could possibly leave the ambuance off the run for hours with the nursing staff playing silly buggers and the dire conditions and backlog for getting a trolley in beaumont hospital A+E.

Only UCD is recognised for AP training currently.

I can answer this as of earlier this year, yes they are. I saw the airport ambo at beaumont for a few hours. Sure that's what it't there for. If they need another they call the DFB.

I can see your point DreDre but the DFB are upskilling and licence for that but in the main UCD/NASC is the training institute that has apporved licence for AP training.
