Fashion Advisor/Personal shopper

    Hi there,

Need advice please, if anyone has a minute. I'm a male in my 30's and work in a non-formal industry, so my clothes are pretty much jeans, T-shirts and runners, throw in a few hoodies, zippies and v-necks in the winter.
Anyway, i've been feeling lately that I need to 'grow up' with my style. I certainly don't want to go suit and tie, but would like to head more towards smart-casual and more away from college student.
I have a semi-decent dress sense, but definitely could do with some help. So, I was thinking fashion advisor, just to point me in the right direction...

Does anyone have any experience with them, or know of any you would trust.

I did the obvious google search and came up with the below, which looks pretty good, but would like to get a recommendation or feedback from personal experience.

    Thanks a lot,

A day spent surfing mens (and womens) fashion blogs/pages/sites will answer most of the questions your need to know and the money better spent on buying a good jacket and some chinos (the mid point between jeans and trousers :)).
There is a wealth of free advice around - take advantage of that first. That way when you go to see a personal shopper you'll be armed with the basics and make them earn their money.
Try Ask Andy to get hints, tips and directions. Flick through blogs like The Satorialist to get a feel of what you like and don't like.
A personal shopper will tell you what you can wear but it's you that should develop a Style of your own.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Well I can tell you from personal experience that Ruth (from the above site) is super lovely and knows her stuff. She does deal mostly with colours and styles, so if it's basics you're looking for as a starter, you could do worse than getting an appointment with her. She'll tell you the colours you can wear for your skin, which might sound a bit poncey, but you'd be surprised what it can achieve. You'll get a good idea of what generally suits you, but the key thing will be to take that information and use it to create your own personal style... Do the stuff the Old Goat talks about, checking out blogs (I do love The Sartorialist) and generally getting an idea about what kind of style you want to emulate and carve into your own.

I've no experience of these but Debenhams offer free personal shoppers with no obligation to buy. Just ask in the store.

    Hey folks,
Cheers for the advice. I will definitely spend a some time on the blogs. Not sure if I'm ready for chinos just yet, don't know why. but i definitely like the idea of getting some pointers after I have had a look around.

    Thanks again,
    Flinty

Have you any stylish close female friends who you could ask for help, most girls would jump at the chance to give you a few pointers, like a grown up doll :D

You can't go wrong with dark fitted jeans and a nice shirt with a tailored jacket.
Perhaps go shopping with a friend and see what suits you. Good luck!

Haha... I certainly do have some very stylish female friends I could ask and it's something I will do. I would like to develope something of my own sense of style first though, so I am at least a doll with a brain :)

Are you talking skinny jeans? I don't think they would be me, but the shirt and tailored jacket does sound good.

Cheers all...looking forward to this adventure
