Rule query

    Hi everybody,

I need advice please. In a sport not too dissimilar to golf, when a rule doesn't allow for a certain situation, we refer to the R&A rulebook.

A situation developed over the weekend in a team event which had plenty of spectators. A player putted a ball on a green, and given the location of the hole, when missing the hole it ran off the green and in the direction of the flagstick which was horizontal on the surround.

A non-playing member ran and moved the flagstick, thus preventing the ball from striking it.

Can any penalty be imposed in this situation?

Firstly there is no penalty if you strike a flagstick if it is off the green. If it were on the green there would be no penalty in that situation. See decisions book 17-1/6 and 17-1/7

There's no penalty if a player putting on the green putts his ball off the green and strikes flagstick?

Crazy golf is just a bit of fun, I wouldn't worry about it if I was you.

My mistake. Sombody said that to me once and I took it onboard without checking. Having checked, the rulebook makes no differenciation between the flagstick laying on the green or off it.

It doesn't change the fact that there is no penalty though.

I presume you are refering to pitch and putt?

I think you have this wrong or am i reading what you are saying incorrectly?? There is definitely a penalty for hitting a flagstick that is laying on the green if you are putting..up until a couple of years ago other players were not permitted to run and move the flag if it looked like hitting it, they can do that now. To my mind if you are putting on a green, the flag is out of the hole and lying on its side and if your ball strikes the flag it is a penalty - anyone clarify??

You're reading it wrong but I think I can see how.

When I said there is no penalty I was refering to the senario described in the OP. There is a penalty it you hit the flagstick whether in the hole ot not when you are on the putting green.
