Resident Evil 3 any good?

So at the weekend I scored a copy of Resident Evil 3 Nemesis for PS1 at a car boot. I paid 1 euro for it and it's in mint condition, happy days!
Seeing how this is my very first resident evil game, I wanted to know how it compares to the rest in the series. Also, anybody reckon I should start playing from the first installment?

    Thanks

i liked that game, but I wouls suggest playing through RE 1 and 2 first if you really want to get the full experience of the series

3 is my favourite of the PS1 games.

Fantastic and Mercenaries mode is great fun too.

Resi 3 is very good but not the Resi 2 beater for me. And one of the bosses is really annoying and unfair. Still a great game.

Yeah but in all fairness any game to follow RE 2 was never going to be as good, RE2 is fantastic

I have a bit of a grudge with Resident Evil 3.

I played 1 and 2, cleared the games inside and was hooked by them. I loved the first two games and when 3 was announced in the magazines I was delighted, I couldn't wait to play it. I bought every magazine for the next few months which had any pictures or words about Resident Evil 3.

Now, I could say that the games magazines ruined the game for me by hyping it up - "you can now walk upstairs! The weather changes! The time changes! etc" but the game itself, upon sober reflection, was a pale shade of the first two.

It's a more action orientated game for sure but I think it lost the element of dread and suspense that made the first two so amazing. That ****ing boss Nemesis, the big guy who keeps chasing you, after awhile it just becomes annoying. It's the worst kind of gimmick as far as I'm concerned. The story and the characters were one-dimensional. There was so much potential for the 3rd game when it was based in Raccoon City.

One example of how the makers failed to live up to the challenge was the Hospital stage in the game. I thought that the Hospital would be the best part, think about it....all the sick, dying people in the City showing up at one spot, all turning into the undead. Bodybags piling up in the hallways, some twitching and moaning. Doctor's performing hasty amputation's without anesthetic in a vain bid to halt the spread of the virus. The floors slick with pools of blood. The Morgue door's locked tight with a steel padlock but still groaning and about to burst as hundreds of Zombie's press against it. Anarchy. Madness.

It was not so. I won't get into it now, but in any case, if I were you Crowman I would get a hold of Resident Evil (Remake) on the Gamecube, then play Resi 2, THEN play Resi 3.

I'd completely agree with Augmerson, 3 is a shadow of 2, and nothing like the first game. I'd say you could play just 2 first, and treat 1 as something else entirely. Its far far less action oriented than even 2, and a totally different experience.

3 is still a good game, its just not great. I think playing it first might take away the magic of the first time you play a resi game. Since its that bit faster, and you have that quick turn and can walk up stairs (ah the innovations we used to be impresed by :P) you could just find the earlier games slow and cumbersome when you get to them.

Also Carlos... ugh. I wanted to punch him in the face.

3 is good, 1 is better and 2 is the best. Everything after that aint Resident Evil to me though.

2 was by far the best in the series. Total perfection of survival horror for me.

definately agree with the other guys here, you really should play 1 and 2 first. but 3 is a good game, just not near as good as 1 and 2. i personally found 3 the most challenging though

And now I want to play Resident Evil 1.5...

Ok, I decided to Park RE3 up and start at RE1.
Only a couple of hours in but so far so good, I like it. Seems harder than 3 though.
Whats the difference in the RE1 Directors cut version? Is it better than standard version?

Few hours in? you should be finished and all! :P Under 3 hours at least

I think directors cut was just a tiny bit different, different camera angles and stuff

Directors cut had a harder mode with items and enemies moved about, an easy mode and a demo of 2. Its really only worth it if you plan on playing the game through more than once, as Jack said, it's not all that different.

Well it also had some new scenes as well, such as a STARS member turning into a zombie, and uncut opening scene.

They should really release Resi 1.5 on PSN or something, I'd hate to see something like that go unplayed...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,822 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

Resi 1.5 is more likely to be in beta at best, and would probably take a solid 1-2yrs to bring to a releasable state.
Happens with games all the time -- sure look at Resi 4's prototypes!

Personally its my favourite of the PS1 Series, I know alot pf people would disagree me with for some very good reasons but the experience I had playing 3 was like no other.

Nemesis makes the game in my opinion. The sheer dread of being hunted by something you can't stop and knowing he could pop up at any time.

    Puts you on edge.

It was the game I bought a PSone for.

I'd played RE1 on the PC and RE2 and Code Veronica on the Dreamcast.

It was enjoyable enough, but it's not a game I've ever been able to play through a second time.

The Nemesis is no where near as good as Mr. X from RE2 either.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6,162 ✭✭✭Augmerson

Mr. X was the ****. You knew you were dealing with a total badass when you cleared RE2 the second time around and got to the stage where he crashes through the roof after and later in the Railyards....well, this video says it all

+1 You need to play the first or you wont have a clue whats going on. I thought 3 was the weakest of the series in my opinion.

Completely agreed. I didn't care for the
    Nemesis stalker
    gimmick. I'd really recommend playing Resi 1 & 2 beforehand :)

I love Resident Evil; of the "PS1 era" I'd say 1 > 2 > 3....although i think 2 is the most popular in general; it's probably because I like the
mansion setting rather than the police station.

    Otherwise 4>Remake>5 :)

That said, if you played #3 first, it's all up and up from there!!

The one where you have lure nemesis in close and then hit the switches to release the acid. It was a total pain. You had to stand under the acid showers and wait for nemesis to get close enough then hit the switch to release the acid. The problem was you couldn't hit the switches by hand so had to use a gun. It was nearly impossible to hit them with a handgun so you had to use a shotgun and because you had to aim up you had to be close so it was nearly impossible to not get hit by the acid which was really damaging. I just felt it was a matter of luck that you didn't get hit by the acid. Ended up Bringing a load of healing items and the shotgun to get past it and burned through all my healing items. I feel sorry for anyone that got there with none.

Or you could just use L2 to auto-aim at obstacles instead of enemies.

Well yeah but the game didn't exactly make that clear or an integral part of gameplay :) If I'd played it now I would have run screaming to gamefaqs instead of getting frustrated. I actually consciously refused to use auto aim at the start of the game because I thought I didn't need it being a veteran of the series at that stage so no wonder I never figured that out :)

TBH that's a bit like in Tomb Raider 2. There's a bit in the second last level I was stuck on for a week. I was on a ladder and had to jump from the ladder to catch the one behind me. However I couldn't do it because lara whenshe jumped from ladders jumed the wrong way. I happened to be in town and looked at the strategy guide in virgin megastore to help me out and discovered that there was a move that let you turn in mid air when jumping off ladders which wasn't needed throughout the whole game except for that bit in the second last level. I was so pissed off.

    Didn't read the manual eh?
You probably didn't know how to contact Meryl in MGS either did you?:)

Bought it second hand with no manual! Although it does say this in the an in game tutorial. However I didn't need no auto aim in Resi 1 and 2 so I didn't need it in Resi 3!

Resi 2 had Auto-Aim on by default didn't it?

I'm not sure but I know I never used it. The inanimate and shootable non-enemy obstacles were new for Resi 3 though. It was my own fault really. I always wondered about that boss because Capcom are up there with Konami as one of the only companies that make great boss fights and they always make them fair in that if you are good you'll never take damage so there was always something very off about that fight to me. At least now I know why!
