I saw a great big, scary insect in Glendalough last week. I searched on Google, but cannot find anything resembling it. Someone said it was a wood wasp, but it was far larger, and didn't look like the images I found.

Basically, it was like a great wasp, about three or four inches long(!), vivid black and yellow, with stripes, and huge yellow eyes about the size of peas. It had a great big thing that looked like a stinger, about an inch long, although it may have been a thing for laying eggs.

It was like something that belonged in the Amazon rainforest! Has someone been importing dodgy crates of bananas recently?

Has anyone an image of it, or can anyone identify it?

It was a wasp, apparently due to the higher levels of altitude in that particular region they grow a lot quicker and feed of the arse holes of baby sheep (sometimes known as lambs) but they have not been known to attack humans as they have a fear of hair.

Nah never heard of anything like this !

Hoho, no, nothing quite so ordinary! There were actually a few people staring in wonder at it, before it took off at great speed. The sheer size of the thing was terrifying. I had my camera, but was too dumbstruck to think of taking a picture of it!

Perhaps somebody somewhere is pumping wasps full of steroids, but there'd be few people laughing if a swarm of these monsters arrived to take over! I've posted in the nature forum, to see what I find out there.

I doubt it, the chance of seeing one on his own (they go round in groups), let alone in Ireland is very low. Also they don't grow to 4 inches. Most likely a dragonfly.

It was possibly a European Hornet, smaller and less aggressive than the African ones. I had one fly into my office not too long ago. Can't upload the pic at the moment.

op must be on something very high, the asian hornets are as big as you would get a wasp-ish type insect.

No, I panicked and killed it thinking it was going to kill me first. Then I googled to see what it was and it looked like the European one on Wiki, I felt bad that it was the harmless one so I took a pic* and held a little ceremony for the wee chap, then pretended to get back to work.

About maybe 10-15 years ago we managed to capture one of the wasps that the op describes. About 2 inches long plus an inch long tail. Never found out what it was. No internet back then but we took an educated guess that it was a wood wasp. As far as i know they are harmless
