Windows Security Update problem

    Hi,

    I am having problems with a security update (KB2286198) for Windows 7 (64-bit) that has failed to install many times over the last couple of days. It gets to around 90-95% installed then I get a failed message.

    On Friday night, I got a message when logging off that an update was going to be installed (I assumed it was this update), and the computer switched off after, presumably, installing the update.

    I now find that all my icons to programs, which are links (i.e. shortcuts to the programs) are now showing as blank pages.

    Reading up on the net, it seems this is a "side effect" of installing this patch. But I've just been asked to install the update again, and again it failed to install.

    Is anyone else having a similar problem?

    I don't think it's a side effect so much as a direct effect of that patch; reading about it here it seems intended to resolve a vulnerability in how Windows handles shortcuts.

    I haven't had this issue, but will try and reproduce it later. Are you getting a specific stop code or installation error?

    It is giving an error code, but when you go looking for what that means, you just get generic suggestions, nothing specific.

    McAfee Total Protection - Never had a problem with it before in terms of blocking updates, etc.

    use system restore to roll back before you put in the patch first

    don't forget to clear the cache in IE, and all the other crap you have to do when auto update jams up

    download patch separatley , disconnect from internet , use msconfig to turn off all non-MS stuff and then install the patch

    OK, just turned on my home pc where I had the issue and lo and behold, all the icons are back!

    Weirder and weirder!!
