    Hi there,
I've got a 01 Renault Megane and one of the rear shock absorbers has just gone, gives a loud knocking noise when going over bumps.

How much roughly should this cost to get fixed?

And can I drive it safely (only for about a week)?

    Thanks for your help

replace as soon as you can. the shock absorber keeps the wheel in contact with the road.
would also recommend doing the pair. Think they are only telescopics on the rear of that car (depending on the year) so they would be a cheap fix.

Yeah they're telescopics as far as I can tell. Thanks for the help

It might be the bump stops or the top mounts either.
Push down on the car and see if it comes straight back up or does it wallow about for a while.

If it's a weak shock then the back end should be particularily springy when you bounce it by hand instead of damping out quickly. A loud knocking noise over bumps could also be worn bushes or a broken spring.

I can see no connection between broke shock absorber and knocking noise when going over bumps.

If you think, that shock is gone, because it knocks, you most likely are wrong.

Is there any oil leaking of this shock absorber?
