How to stop liquid running out of tin?

Have a load of apples from our trees so made Apfel Struedal and it turned out ok but then tried apple upsidedown cake with maple syrup.
You boil the maple syrup and put it in the tin first then place the apples in etc. Used a regular non loose bottom stick cake tin so I guess that could be my mistake.
But are tins with a non removeable bottom leaky?

    Any tips?

What you can do, even with a loose-bottom tin, is make a cartouche, but instead of cutting it even with the diameter of the base, is to make it 2-3 inches wider, make some cuts along it with a scissors, then line the lightly greased base. The cuts will come up along the sides and stick because of the greasing, which will allow you to pour in the syrup/apples, then cake batter on top and it won't drip out :)
