Flavour of the month protests which fade away without action happening

I refer of course to things that has cheesed the public up big time for a short space of time.

John O Donoghue for instance. The fact that he is not continuously hounded after the media circus finished baffles me. Net result? We now have Dempsey and Callely with the same witch hunt for very similar reasons.

Thing is, they'll get left alone and in another couple of months, perhaps Mary Coughlan will be the next one for that bit of botox she charged Joe Taxpayer for back in '07.

My point is that we do this media merry-go-round over and over. It makes me wonder, do these issues REALLY bother us enough? Or are we just making conversation about the latest "in thing". Personally, the above issues annoy the crap out of me. I pay way too much tax and honest people out of a job are losing out on benefits that they would be entitled to. Why? Because Ivor Callely feels that he is "entitled".

Do people just get tired of pushing these issues and move on or what? I think that the last laugh is on the likes of Callely because of this. All he has to do is sit silent for a few weeks until we all get bored of him and/or I finish saving up for that Double-Barrelled shotgun.

i feel that people have the great ideas to put on a protest for a day but don't have the balls to carry it through properly

couldn't care less, far more important things in the world that politics, your family/kids or music or movies or what's for dinner this evening.

i pay absolutely no attention to politics, never voted and never will because if you do you just legitimise what the b*stards do

agree with the start, but by not voting is actually more probable in keeping the bastards in

Bleedin protesters! Some people will protest about anything just because they maybe thing they should, or because they're idiots!

I have a "friend" on Facebook who refused to go on holiday with her parents. They didnt think she could look after herself.

Her parents then locked her out. So she staged a "protest" by sitting outside the apartment on a bean bag on her laptop.

You may have questions at this point.......... but what's the point?

What exactly do you mean by "continuously hounded"? There's a simple mechanism of registering your disgust and that's the ballot box. It's far more effective than marches, and macho talk about double-barrelled shotguns.
and/or I finish saving up for that Double-Barrelled shotgun.

I think posturers like you hijacking the political discourse is one of the reasons why people don't protest more in Ireland. Only a few months ago, there was a large protest on the streets of Dublin. People legitimately expressing their outrage at the government, giving vent to their convictions, only for a group of idiots to hijack it and attempt to storm the Dail. All of a suddent the attention is on them, and the opinions of the thousands other fade into the background.

The opinion of anyone so apathetic that they refuse to engage in anyway with the system that governs their country and, to an extent, their lives, is really not worth listening to.

I believe they think something similar in Dáil Éireann.
Probably one of the reasons we are in this mess............ Absolute disconnection on the ground and above.

I definitely agree with the point you're making but the first part
of what he said is true, people who can't move beyond
the primal urge to condemn other human beings for attempting
to change the world in one of the few ways
possible should be shown for what they are - confused.

You can't let the idea that some people hijack a protest discourage you
because protesting has the real possibility of making serious change
if it's done right. Instead of insulting people who try it would be more
constructive to think of a way you can intelligently aid these people
    next time something happens.
If you believe protesting achieves nothing you're extremely ignorant of
history & should do a bit of googling, if not proper reading ,
before you embarrass yourself - whoever you are :p

The government might be having a good laugh, sh1tting on us from a great height, and assuming that we'll just put up with it, but in all good revenge movies, the lead character disappears for a couple of years, during which time he trains a Ninja army, then comes back to carve the bastards up.

Are the two years up yet?

WTF ? i don't understand ppl who have no interest in their nation's politics or current affairs yet head for the nearest copy of heat magazine to check their daily fix of bubblegum gossip. If you don't vote you have no right to have an opinion on what the 'b*astards' do either way. its this kind of apathetic opinion that has us in the state we are in. We don't care enough to change it, we all want to rabble rabble rabble but when it comes to actually actively standing up and doing something we stand back and say......' yeah i would protest but ye see, i've me evenin class at 7 on tuesday and it looks like it might rain anyway and sure there'll be plenty of ppl there anyway blah blah blah.

I'd be more apathetic if i wasn't so lethargic...

If these ****ers haven't already been shamed into leaving their political positions and promising to make amends while simultaneously promising never to try and hold a position of responsibility then all the protesting in the world won't force the likes of O'Donoghue or Callely to step down.

no, by not voting, i dont legalise what they get up to, if you vote for a bad system you agree to how it works...duh!
& just coz I wrote about music & movies doesnt mean I'm into the droll pop culture fed to the masses, you wrote heat magazine not me.

so why acknowledge it with a reply?

    oh btw rabble rabble.

I mean this stuff is hardly important in the large scheme of things really.
spending time with your loved one, seeing and enjoying parts of your country are more important, learning about different parts of the country, maybe even learning our native tongue is more important than what some gobsh*te crooked politician that most of us had never even heard of until last week is a bit more important
