Its a reliable as your 3G connection would be if you had a 3g ipad, Just that this device can connect to others for no extra charge.

True, I was just badly burned by Three before, but they do seem to bring out some pretty cool stuff!

Everything about 3 is bad compared to the rest, however their broadband really works well, plus its free to Roam in UK and other countries where there is 3.

Or, if your looking for an even better and cheaper alternative:

If you already have a jailbroken iPhone - you can download an app called MyWi from Cydia. (costs 10$ if i recall correctly)

MyWi enables you to share your 3G connection with any computing device using wi-fi - so you can share your 3G internet from your iPhone with your iPad/laptop at no extra charge (data is deducted from your existing bundle, no tethering allowance is required)

Really? Your iPhone can emit a wi-fi signal? Didn't think that was possible... thought it was a hardware absence.

    Guys/gals,

If you are thinking of buying the 3G version of Ipad, Don't, it costs 100 euros more that the normal wifi version.

Get the Modem E585 from 3 and your Ipad or Iphone or Laptop can connect to it. So forget about Iphone tethering charges.

Nonsense. Mifi is great if you have one already but why carry around two devices when in the era of svelte iPad you only need one? I sold my wifi iPad within 3 weeks of having to get it, because there were no 3G ones available. I ordered a 3G one and have never looked back.

Why? Because while iPad battery lasts 10 hours, the mifi only lasts for 5 and so the danger is always there that you'll be left for part or all of your journey without access - and that would drive me plain nuts. Couple iPad 3G with a SIM From Tre Italia, 5€ for 3Gb a month and you're sucking diesel.

    Nice!

I do have the mifi but only cos I've no landline at home for broadband. Find it pretty good actually

It is definitively possible, I have done it myself - the only thing is it drains battery quite a bit.

I know i could be shot for saying it in this forum but what about a Desire/Nexus One WITH an iPad, Wifi Tethering without the charges!

Well, I have 3 MiFIs but then I'm bonkers. The new one trounces the old one for speed although I'm informed that the hardware inside is the same.

Incidentally, there are no charges for tethering on 3 with an iPhone (not that you can tether an iPhone to an iPad).

Dont forget the ipad wifi has no gps either. Whereas the 3g does.

If your iPhone is Jailbroken you can purchase an app called Mywi that allows you tether to your iPhone. It's $20 but well worth it.

So after spending the initial wad of cash on the device, you have to spend time and effort "jailbreaking" it then another cash sum to do something that "should" imho be available out of the box on a device of that cost. Lovely.

The OP's point makes a lot of sense by the way if you can use a 3G dongle with the Ipad. It wouldnt surprise me if you couldnt though.

Or do buy it, if the reason you're buying it has nothing to do with 3G data and everything to do with the gps capabilities.

I agree. But just to be clear, You don't have to jailbreak or do anything with your iPad, myfi is for Jailbroken iPhones. The iPad picks up the iPhone on wifi and away you go.

If anyone has a Nokia with wi-fi running Symbian OS, "Joikuspot" does the same thing, creating a mobile hotspot for the iPad to connect to. Was doing this before I canged my N97 for an iPhone4.

Oh... uh... Sir, for most of us mortals 5 hours (of pr0n) in one sitting would be too much. You Sir have my full respect.

I've been mulling getting the iPad 3G over the past week or so. The price difference over a wifi model would get me a mifi from 3 or maybe an unlocked mifi from ebay.

Would the sim from my iPhone fit in the iPad if I got one, thus sharing the data account. Assuming the iPhone SIM is a microSIM.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to tether my iPhone and create a wifi hotspot on the iPhone, but don't want to jailbreak. iProxy is one way and I've managed to make it work, but that would only enable Safari on the iPad.

Also wondering, if I got an iPad 3G in the US, will it work over here?

    Thanks,

    Alan.

The iPad uses a micro sim, the only problem you'll have with a US iPad is the plug, you'll need an adapter for it, otherwise there's no difference.

Ah right cool. The plug isn't an issue, have plenty of them here. My Macbook came from the US too.

Hard to know what to do. iPad 3G or not 3G.......maybe not if I'm sensible, cos it's only the very odd time I'd be away with no wifi and no macbook.

For me the extra 100 for the 3G was the deal breaker plus 10 or 20 euros a month for a data bundle. I was reluctant to jailbreak my iPhone but did solely tether it to my iPad when I'm away from home or a free wifi spot in town. (3 give you free access to Bitbuzz for life and stick a fiver in a Starbucks card and ditto) All in all, I think i made the best move but if you can afford the 3G and the monthly add on then go for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭AlanD

I think maybe if I got the wifi version and see what sort of 3G use I require, I might upgrade to the 3G version when the next iPad comes out, which hopefully will have a camera for some facetime fun

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,408 ✭✭✭naasrd

I think that's the best. I thought I missed out when I bought wifi only but now I'm glad.

The 3G version has GPS functionality may be a consideration at some point

True, but how useful is that really? Unless you could slot your iPad in to your car, which would be awesome, what would be the point of GPS in your iPad?

I would have to say I would be pleased with a solution like this....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭palm

Another advantage of the mifi is storage space. The MIFI can use a microSD card (up to 32 GB).

I have a €16.97 / month data plan from O2 with 15 GB of data. I can connect to iPad, iPhone, laptop, (up to 5 devices). This is the only data I pay for. Good value I think.

could tell me if there is any data charges from o2.ie for using mywi. I have just downloaded mywi and am afraid to use it. I got burned last year when tethering came out.

Don't worry, it's included in your 2GB usage plan - even if you don't have tethering enabled.

If you want to reassure yourself, go on a few webpages today and check tomorrow if your bill accounts for separate data (which it won't)

Possible with countless phones!! Any Symbian phone with Wifi and a lot of Android handsets too.

And possible out of the box too.

Sorry if this sounds stupid but i'm not very techy - does the 3G dongle work okay with iPad Wifi?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭miralize

No that wont work, unless you have a MiFi

    What a stupid post.

Seriously, this thread should be ditched and the user shouldn't be entitled to an opinion. This device whilst excellent defeats the entire purpose of an iPad 3G to begin with.

I have a Huawei E5830, which does the same thing. It's a cool little device, but I'd prefer a 3G iPad to be honest. My next iPad will have 3G, definitely. :)
