I stayed at D'Lagoon. It was a nice place to stay but the staff were unfriendly. Bed time is 12am (no joke) and they secretly sell beer(they're Muslim and can have nothing to do with alcohol) from out the back if you give the special wink. $2 a pop though for a small can. They have a cool Monitor lizard over 6ft long that roams the beach and the snorkeling is the best I ever seen. You can get up early in the morning and swim with reef sharks and then later go swim with giant green turtles. An amazing experience. They have a pet monkey as well and it is the only resort on that beach.

I didn't go to the Perhentians, but I went to Tioman Island down south and it was amazing. I went to ABC, and there was literally me and 3 other tourists. Was heavenly. And tax free, $1 a can of beer. Seems no one there cared about the laws. I stayed in a hostel for RM15 a night.
Also, if you want to a more lively place, there's Salang, the next exit when you're on the ferry. I'm sure Perhentians are great too!
