You're only being charged €1000 for insurance on a golf or bora? Is that under a parent or just you?

Bora is just a golf with a boot. If you want a golf go 1.6. 1.4 is underpowered.

VW 1.4 litre is a poor engine, sluggish and not very reliable. Gearboxes are weak on them too.

1.9 tdi will go pretty good, a lot better than the 1.4, and the vw diesel engines are good, always have been really. You better check out insurance though, because it could penalise you for the 1.9 engine, that said though, lots of young guys seem to manage to get insured on tdi golfs so you mught be ok. the full licence will help a lot

i should just add... there isn't much point getting the sdi (non turbo) diesel in those, it's just horrible and slow, not unreliable just a bit useless compared to the tdi

It depends on what year. Some were crap, some broke, some were fond of drinking oil. The diesel would be best if you can afford it but then again if you're not doing massive miles then you don't need a diesel.

well if you're not doing massive miles a diesel can still be good, these days usin feck all fuel is as good a reason as any, good economy over short mileage is still good economy, and for a first car for tippin around it's no bad thing
