I did too. I had forgotten all about it until I came across a field full of it yesterday while driving across the north near Down.

A big, very big, bright yellow field full of it. Twas a beautiful sight and one that brought me back to my child hood when we used to go on holidays around Ireland. Didn't there used to be fields and fields of the stuff?

What ever happened to growing it? Does anyone still do it bar that farm I seen in in yesterday?

It's a lovely sight. The Swords roundabout is full of it at the moment. Fantastic colour.

Edit: The correct name is Canola.

You'd think their would be more rape than there is, given the green movement.

It is a beautiful sight. Maybe my memory isn't the best but I remember that when being driven through Tyrone to Armagh and then down the old dublin road to Dublin from Newry there were just fields upon fields of beautiful bright yellowness.

In saying that Armagh, the Orchard county, used to be full of apple trees to and they seem to be somewhat lacking these days to :/

Maybe there were old EEC grants for growing all that back in the hey day and now that there are no grants no one can be arsed growing it.

The correct name is Brassica Napus, or Brassica campestris or Rapeseed, Canola is a trademark in Canada and the US, and was favoured because of the negative conotations associated witht the word Rape. The name canola was derived from Canadian oil, low acid. Rape comes from the Latin Rapum meaning turnip to which rapeseed is related.

I do love seeing a field of Rape, its always reminded me of summer. Theres a few farmers in the midlands that have it growing, and it makes for lovely driving on a sunny day!!!
