Junior Dos Santos really did a number on him!

    30–26, 30–27, 30–27

I think he is a good fighter but in obviously non-peak condition that he does use to his advantage against non-top 10 guys but ultimately... its going to hold him back!

Went the distance with JDS with I dunno how many uppercuts and jabs to the face/head when JDS has finished most of his fights in the 1st round?

Ya you're right, Nelson ain't all that

Like Junior said, Nelson would be trouble for anyone in HW div at the moment

Advice: Next time you post ill informed posts will you at least attach a spoiler tag. Or even better yet, think before you post.

Nelson just went the distance with the most dangerous young heavyweight in the game. He went further against JDS than Werdum, Crocop, Yvel, Gonzaga etc. So to answer your original thread title.......yep, not all that

I thought Cain V was "most dangerous young heavyweight in the game"...

Roy has been shown up as a top 10 gatekeeper and not an elite fighter (well - thats as I see it)

Who ever said Roy was an elite fighter? Sorry but this whole thread is built on a straw man argument.

Nelson is an excellent fighter definitely in the top 10 HW div. Just that the HW has some top notch fighters at the moment. I would love to see JDS vs Velaquez. If JDS was fighting Big Nog instead of Velasquez, then I think he would be fighting Lesnar for the belt. I would definitely thrown Nelson into the mix of Lesnar, Cain, Carwin, JDS, Mir & Nog. Those top 7 fighters will just be going round fighting each other in circles for quite some time apart from Lesnar who I see staying on top for some time to come and Nog is definitely on his way down the ladder.

Santos couldn't finish him, not completely bad for Nelson.

Roy Chubby Brown - oops i mean Roy Nelson took a huge amount of punishment at UFC 117.

Is he a future title contender? I just can't see it.

He is a very likeable fighter with a lot of heart and i enjoy watching him but on his current form at 117 i can't see him getting a title shot never mind winning it.

That said, you can't count him out of a fight. He is commonly underestimated based on his appearance but it's only a fool that underestimates him. He can take a punch and has a very dangerous right hand and it only takes one punch to change a fight. However, in the fight at 117 he lost the energy to throw the big right effectively and he lost it at an early stage so for most of that fight he was just surviving. It's possible that he has peaked and now is on his way back down the ladder.

Could he turn his game around to greatly improve his fighting? it's possible but again i can't see it happening.

He clearly has conditioning problems due to his fat levels. He was breathing very heavy in that fight from a very early stage. If he lost the fat and improved his fitness he would probably do better, as a lot of people are saying, but i don't think that will happen. His appearance is part of who he is and i don't think that it's something he wants to change.

maybe we've already seen the best from Big Country........ ?

Nelsons role as a gatekeeper has been secured with this loss. Sure JDS didnt finish him, but he beat the crap out of him. He will beat the odd few "named" guys but thats about it. Im with Joe Rogan on this one, he should cut the fat and he might actually be a fantastic fighter.

I think getting punched in the head over and over had more to do with his condition than his cardio did.

His conditioning is not up to scratch. I was amazed at his cardio in The Ultimate gasfest fighter 11 but on the big stage it's nothing special. He could cut 2 stone and hit the scale a strong 240. He has KO power and a fantastic ground game so I wish he would make the most of it.

roy is just one of those case's of what could have been

Rovert beat me too it!! Nelson actually has great cardio for the state a him! but taking thos heavy punches definitely had the effect on him. Where a regular guy would be asleep on the mat, he kept standing, obviously becoming disorientated and sluggish so it looked like condition problems but really I think he just had too many big hits to his head.

Was very cringe worthy when JDS hit him in the belly, looked awful.

Just saw this on a Kimbo Slice thread somewhere
This isn’t a heavyweight. He’s just a fat Middleweight. If he was in shape, he’d be walking around at 205 and fighting at 185. But he can’t lay off of that stuff. I bet he gets loose on a fluffer nutter. This dude is a complete clown. He dominated Kimbo on the ground then didn’t do a damn thing. Peep it.

I agree with it until he calls him a complete clown. Imagine Nelson V Silva at Middleweight? Awesome stuff.

A nice article on the subject:
    http://mmajunkie.com/news/20216/ask-the-fight-doc-is-ufc-heavyweight-roy-nelsons-weight-holding-him-back.mma

Every time I see "Big Country" compete, I am impressed that he can get such a high level of production out of that body. Roy Nelson is a perfect case study to better understand cardiovascular fitness – or what MMA fans commonly call "cardio" or "gas." (Please, no fart jokes).

Nelson's ample body and belly cause many viewers to make a common mistake. They make a direct correlation between physical appearance and cardiovascular fitness. As counter-intuitive or backward as it may seem, significantly overweight people can have impressive cardio. Likewise, thin and/or muscular, well-defined people can have terrible cardio.

Why? Because cardiovascular fitness measures the body's ability to take in, distribute and use oxygen (according to the Center for Disease Control).

Cardio is primarily a measure of the heart's ability to efficiently pump blood and oxygen to the muscles. It is not a measure or function of physical appearance.

To properly assess cardiovascular fitness, a serious athlete will undergo a test called VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake). Everyone has seen endurance athletes on TV running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike with EKG pads/wires hooked to them and with what looks like a snorkel coming out of their mouths. That's the VO2 max test. (I could get fairly technical here, but I'll assume that we've all got better things to do.)

Here's a simple test: Briskly walk up three flights of stairs. If your heart is pumping hard, your head is throbbing or a bit light, and/or you're short of breath, guess what: Your cardio isn't much regardless of how you look.

The follow-up question to me is: How good could Nelson be if he shed those excess pounds? Yes, he would be quicker, more explosive and more athletic in general. Also, if he carried significantly less weight, his personal cardio would, in fact, improve.

Ever wonder why the most elite heavyweight championship contests rarely go to a decision? It is extremely difficult for the big boys – ones of all shapes – to keep up the pace for the fourth and fifth championship rounds. Therefore, they try to finish early.

Did you see how hard both Nelson and opponent Junior Dos Santos were breathing in the third round? I loved the fight, but I was glad when it ended – and I think they were, too.

Thought Nelson showed he had a good chin and as long as he wasn't on his back i thought that he might have tagged Junior with a wild punch. Sure look at Struve as well and also "Magic" Mike Russow. Junior may have to re-assess his game after that one.

People who have never fought cannot IMO understand the difference between doing lots of hard exercise & doing lots of hard exercise while being hit hard in the body and head (it makes a big difference!).

Is that the reason though? I would have thought it was because the bigger the more power and easier to be knocked out hence end a fight on average quicker, no?
