Does Chael Sonnen deserve to be fighting Anderson Silva?

I really don't think he deserves this title shot. What three victories in a row gets you a title shot. I mean he lost to the last guy to mount a challenge to the title and his three wins all go to decisions.

Is he getting this fight and a big secret bonus on the understanding that he'd hype the fight to ridiculous levels and go toe to toe with Silva.

Is there no one else they could have matched up Silva with?

Yes, he beat two very good fighters (Okami and Marquardt)

What? And that's the basis for a title shot?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,089 ✭✭✭✭rovert

Dana wanted someone to go after him after the Dubai fight. Thats it really.

Okami and Marquardt are both top 10 guys

I think it is. The only other person I can think of at 185 is Vitor and he's getting the next shot and coming back from an injury.

What do you think makes someone deserve a title shot? Who do you think should be getting it?

Jake Shields. What I'm really saying is that there's a lack of quality in this weight division compared to Silva. They should have moved sooner for Shields, but I guess once he beats Kampmann he'll be next in line.

Realistically he was next due to Vitors shoulder injury anyway.

Only person i would say would have had a case in terms of fighting him as an outside was Belcher. With the winner then getting Silva/Vitor

Shields will be fighting at WW...Not to mention Sonnen would have a better chance than Shields at being Silva. Coupled with the fact both couldn't sell a fight to a fan with a gift card.

Shields is fighting at 170 lbs and is staying there if you listen to what Dana says. So he's out too. The UFC had to wait for Shields contract to finish before they could sign him.

Jake Sheilds wasn't even on the UFC roster when the fight was decided on.

And Jake Sheilds hasn't been fighting the best Middleweights in the world like Chael Sonnen has been.

Marquart and Okami are both Top 10 MWs in the world. There's simply nobody else worthy of a shot (excluding Vitor who had to pull out)

Lets put things into perspective here guys.

His record against Jeremy Horn is 0-3 :rolleyes::rolleyes:

    That means nothing in fairness.

    Anderson Silva's record v Ryo Chonan is 0-1. Doesn't mean a thing!

Who gives a sh1t? How many MMA fights did Brock have when he fought for the championship?

And if you want to name someone that should've got it ahead of him go ahead..

3 wins in a row? Last two against top 10 fighters? Okami is rumoured to be one fight away from a title shot too. Nate was a top contender before the Sonnen fight too.

How does he not qualify? And you still haven't posted a suitable replacement for him.

Do you live in a Universe where the only MMA organisation in the world is UFC?

Who do you think should be fighting Silva instead then? Instead of telling us who SHOULDN'T be fighting (or picking fighters from the wrong weight division), who SHOULD have his shot instead?

If you have no actual replacement and a reason they deserve it more, than i can't help but pull out the "T" word... and i don't like to do it :(

He is fighting at 170 and not at 185. Try again.

He's fighting at WW! Not MW... He's also just moved from Strikeforce where the fighters are a 'B' class compared to the UFC's fighters. Also, you were trying to make a point that Sonnen is boring because his fights have gone to a UD. Have you seen Jake Shields fight?!?

    Thanks rovert.

From a style point of few it could make an interesting fight but at 37 it would be just wasting time.

If Mousasi could cut back to 185 he could be the one but he said he wouldn't.

But seriously Ricardo Almeida (12-3) would be a decent pick. Probably in two fights time. Beating Hughes won't have him up to the level he needs to be but fighting a top 3 guy after that would. Almeida has only lost one fight in his last 11.

Dude, you realise Anderson Silva is the MIDDLEWEIGHT Champion right?

(PS...... Silva is only 2 years Le's junior)

But he has fought at 185 and still could. He listed on the UFC as a 185lb'er

I know it did, but this is a grudge match, might have taken it just to fight Hughes. After it he might move up.

He made a permanent move to WW! He fought Matt Brown at 170.

Anyway, your thread is about whether Sonnen DESERVES a title shot. Almeida certainly does not!

He's never beaten a Top 10 guy in the UFC anyway.

Does Sonnen DESERVE a title shot. Maybe it's because I really don't like him, I wanted Okami to fight Silva but Sonnen beat him and the other contender Sonnen beat also, on that basis you could say he does. But his record in my opinion doesn't deserve a title shot. But that's my opinion. More quality is badly needed in this division or Silva gets out of it.

It's just a symptom of Silva being so good and dominant!

There aren't any other TOP quality MWs in the world to add to the division. Not at the moment anyway.

    ********SPOILER***********

He was picked for the fight because he would go at Silva and force him to fight and that's exactly what he did. Dana White was furious over the fiasco of the Silva V Maia fight and he wanted to put Silva against somebody who wouldn't let him dance around and showboat. Chael delivered on his promise. I think despite his loss he's silenced the critics that did not rate him going into this fight.
