    Hi,

I left college 8 years ago, qualified with a B.Eng in Electrical/Electronic. I've been working in the Energy sector since I left college in 2002.

Now I feel it's time to go back and do a masters/phd. I'd really like to do this full time and not in Ireland. The thing is I have no idea of what masters to do, is there a list? Or do I make one up and approach the college? Where do i start, I really haven't a clue. And I'm not in contact with any of my old lecturers.... Can someone point me in the right general direction?

Masters are usually split into two camps - taught and research. With taught ones you go to classes, do assignments and usually write a dissertation. Research ones differ in that they're usually longer (often two years instead of one) and focus primarily on the thesis or dissertation.

As regards what Masters to do, google is your friend! If you have a preference on what country/town you want to go to, check out the websites of colleges in those areas and see what's on offer. If subject is more important than location, google the topics that interest you. Colleges will have lists of their Masters programmes on their websites. Research Masters programmes are a little different, but again should be advertised on the college websites.

Re. the PhD, you would need to consider who you would want to supervise the project and this very often dictates which college you do it at (funding also plays a huge part!).

Also, by going outside the 32 counties, the Irish grants scheme won't give you a cent towards postgrad :(
