Tolls and VAT

Hmm, just got my monthly statement from E-Trip and it appears that there's now VAT added on every toll. This is news to me!

Before there would be a number of passes that had 0% VAT. I know the Port Tunnel was one and I think the M50 was another.

I'm too tired to figure it out at the moment but just thought I'd point it out as this is the first I've heard of it!

This came in fairly recently as far as I know, there's also VAT on parking too, an EU tax apparently, just one of many in dear old Ireland. How in the name of Je$us Christ we're supposed to be competitive with the rest of Europe with all these taxes is beyond me!

Thanks for the replies folks :) One advantage is it makes it quicker to adding to spreadsheet anyway as it's just the 1 figure for vat now :P

They've added VAT to the bill, but it's still the same price. Won't be long before the price rises though.

Yes especially seeing as 85cent of every €1 taken in tax this year is getting pumped in to the Anglo black hole.

If it's an EU tax then won't the rest of the EU be paying it too?

We used to pay VAT on tolls for the M50 when it was privately held. Business could reclaim this VAT. When the government took over the M50, they said they couldn't charge VAT but kept the price the same. This amounted to a 21% increase for businesses.

Now the government has decided that it should charge VAT on top of the current price. In this case it won't effect business as they can go back to reclaiming the VAT, but for the average person its a 21% increase.
