Audi A3 Throttle Problems - Help!!!

Hi Folks, I have a 99 Audi A3T which has been running fine until recently and have started to get a few problems, the latest I need help with.

I drove the car the other night and a few of the lights started appearing on the dash. The alternator light stayed on, and at one stage the ABS light came on.

I turned off the engine and literally two minutes later hopped back into the car and couldn't start the engine. It looked like the battery was gone but as I couldn't get a jump for a couple of days so left it.

When I jump started the car today, I couldn't get the revs above 1100.

The engine seems ok, idling at about 800 revs (bit lower than usual), but everytime I touch my foot on the gas, the revs cut out at 1100 and go back to 800. The engine doesn't stall.

I managed to drive the car home, but because I couldn't get the revs above 1100, I had to drive at 5 miles an hour in 1st gear.

Does this sound like it could be caused by an electrical problem or is there something new going on now?

As I'm a pure numpty when it comes to mechanics...please help

Where are you based, is the car driving?

I would start by getting a diagnostic done on it. If you are around North Dublin I can scan the car for faults using VCDS (vag-com).

Was the battery light on when you jump started it? The flat battery points towards an alternator problem. Sounds like the car is in safety mode because of the low voltage.

Thank guys, I'm based in Galway.

I left the car and went back to it having let the engine run for a bit. When I switched on the engine later the revs were back to normal but the red battery light stayed on but also the alternator warning light on the dash was on.

Is there a way of checking to see if the problem is the battery or the alternator, before I splash out on a new battery?

If the warning light is on it is not the battery. This is telling you there is nothing charging the battery. Most likely the alternator but it would need to be checked to confirm
