Has any County ever had a Player/Manager?

Things are up in a heap down here in Galway and I think Padraig Joyce could be the man for the job but he is still able to play.

If a Manager had good selectors would it be possible?

Clare players have been running the team for years if that counts :)

I don't think it's really an option in GAA, too many players to coach, too much training in winter, also I wouldn't like to get into the whole issue with "expenses" for the manager

I suppose choosing a manager for any project is always a gamble and in the GAA its more complicated in that it has to be a popular choice to boot, so its more of a political decision.

Galway are a side in transition. Too many players gone of the boil either from "burnout" or just aren't good enough, no longer committed etc. I'm not sure you want to be going with another high profile candidate like Joyce - he has absolutely no managerial experience that I know of. He might be too loyal to the existing players that need to be cleared out. He'll attract lots of media attention - something you don't need right now.

What would be your rationale for choosing Joyce - he has been a leader on the field? Does that make him a manger?

Galway need a guy who can put in the hard work building players and will be able to bring in some of the lots of talent that exists in Galway clubs - they have a minor All-Ireland won in 07 don't forget.

The ideal candidate on paper we all know is Kevin Walsh. But Sligo do want to retain him. No one can deny he's done a wonderful job there. And the last time Galway poached a successful Sligo coach it didn't work out at all for them. He'd need at least 2 years to get Galway back into decent shape.

But can Galway county board eat humble pie for the man that just 24 months ago wasn't good enough to take their minors?

Wasn't Val Daly a player-manager for Galway in the past? It must cause resentment with other players when it comes to team selection.

''Ok Tony i know your going well in training and you got 10 points from play the last day, but i'm starting full forward.... right lads ye remember the plan, low ball into myself''
