Fixed - Ford Fusion Clutch goes to the floor without doing anything

This happened to me the other day driving through rush hour traffic and freaked me out a bit. I've found the problem and got it fixed but thought I'd post it in case it happens to someone else. I drive a 1.4l Ford Fusion but i've heard it can happen in Fiestas as well.

Basically I was driving in the M1 and got to Whitehall and hit traffic and came to a stop. The car in front of me pulled off so I put the car into first and lifted the clutch to pull away. I went to put the car into second and pushed the clutch down but it went straight to the floor with no resistance. I freaked that the clutch was gone. I pulled the clutch up and went to put it down again but the same thing happened. I just pulled the car out of gear and let it freewheel down the hill and I got it off the main road. I didn't want to risk moving it until I got it looked at in case I did more damage so I just left it there until the evening.

A friend of mine is a HGV mechanic so I got him to have a look at it. He got in the car and the clutch appeared to be fine. He tested that it was biting and every time he used it was grand. He drove the car home for me without any problems. I drove it to work and back the next day and it didn't happen again. I did some searching and found that the pedal can be disconnected from the lever that pushes the clutch down (I don't know the proper name for it.) I was driving the same route this morning and the same thing happened at pretty much the same spot. I pumped the clutch and it came back.

When I got home I had a proper look and i could see the problem. There is a pin that sticks out of the side of the clutch pedal. The lever that goes to the clutch has an eyelet at the end that goes around the pin to join them together. I could see that the eyelet was very close to coming off. I was able to push it on all the way and I'm going to try and get a cap for the pin to prevent it coming off again. It seems that if you keep pumping the clutch the eyelit will spring back onto the pin and appear to be grand again.
