    Hi,

My sky plus box died (no lights nothing)

I got a second hand box and swapped in the 160 gig disk from my failed box (there was a recording I wanted).

However my new box tells me sky+ functionality not currently available (it was before I swapped the disk).

Should I be able to access my recordings from the old box on the new box after swapping the disk or do I have to reformat the disk to get it to work on the new box ?

    Cheers

    bg

Higly reccommended for Sky + repairs:

He even arranges the outgoing collection for you. Hard drive upgrades are also available (the dead Sky + 160 box only needed a new power supply so I had the hard drive upgraded to 500Gb at the same time. Relatively inexpensive. It only cost £120)

When I had a Thompson Sky Plus 160 box repaired and the hard drive upgraded evrything was fine. However, some recordings (mainly from subscription channels, channel four, RTE etc.) that were copied to the new hard drive displayed the mesdage "recording inturupted, please wait" when I tried to play them. Nothing happened at all when I waited of course. I've since learned that it's something to do with the viewing card and the original box it was paired with. Not sure if this is the case here.

You'll probably need to ring Sky and get the second hand box paired with your veiwing card from the old box.

As rightly stated the card is paired to your orignal box, so I dont think it will work in your new box, but it mite if the card is paired up to your new sky box, give sky a ring and tell them you replaced your box.

They will ask you for the details of your new box such as the version and serial number etc. Once paired you will be able to record again and can try your old recordings once more..

When I connected up the new box before I swapped the disk (did not put my card in or get it paired) I could go into the planner and see what the previous owner had recored but I could not play any of it.

When I swapped the disks I could no longer get into the planner
    Sky+ unavailable.

I am wondering is the disk also paired and needs to be re-formatted to work !!

If your box died, the hard drive is probably ruined too. Sky boxes are very hard on hard drives and I replace mine once a year!!
