    Hi lads,
I just bought a 01 golf tdi, 95000 on the clock. This is my first time owning a turbo diesel car so just looking for any extra things I need to be doing to look after her? Someone said leave it run for 30 seconds before turning her off to allow the turbo cool down, is this correct?? Anything else I should be doing??

Just another question actually, the doe (its a carvan) isn't up until next april so the name on the doe cert is different to mine, do I need to get a new cert or is the one I have ok??

    Thanks
    Alan

when you start it up on a cold morning let it heat up for a good 2-3 mins before you drive of gently foe the remanding 7 mins of warm up.this is to allow the oil to reach a nice temp before you drive it on a bit. what i do is go out start it. then go in and make a cup of tea.

Try not to rev above 2000 rpm when from cold. When the engine is warm dont be afraid to rev up to 4000 when going up the gears every once and a while so the turbo and other bits and bobs can burn off any soot or deposits that build up (perfectly normal) over time.

The turbo cool down thing was a hot topic a few months ago but with my TDI I just park it, do everything I need to do before getting out and leave the engine last. Though, its only really an issue if you are motorwaying for on the last part of your journey. Good habit to have anyway, it wont hurt. I believe it stemmed from the old days when oil wasnt as good as it is now. I cant quite remember.

During the next service check the coolant temp sensor is a newer style one. It can cause trouble.

Make sure the oil you use from now on is fully synth and meets VW505.00 (if your engine is 90hp or 110) and VW505.01 if you have a PD engine (different horsepowers, cant remember right now).
btw, VW505.01 (for the newer PD engine) will work perfectly well in the older (90 or 110hp) TDI's.
Its so important for the PD style TDI but for the older one (which is called VE) it doesnt matter too much. However, you want to take care of the engine its very easy to find oil with the correct spec.

My 00 TDI is on 160k miles and not a bodder on it so you should have many years of happy motoring with it :)

Apparently its not a great idea to leave it ticking over too long from cold, as the oil will not be warm and viscous enough to make its way up around the head of the engine, so you effectively run it "dry" for a few mins around there.

Maybe with the latest fully synth oils this is not a problem, I can only say what I have read though :)

You should start it, and drive off smoothly, and as the lads have said, nothing above 2k until it warms up.

I like to let it idles for 20 secs or so too before shutoff, apparently the turbo bearing is spinning at 10s of thousands of rpm, so you really should give it a chance to stop before you starve it of oil ;)

Yeah, I forgot about that part of it for some reason. There is no benefit to starting the engine and leaving it for a while. The oil will begin to circulate but it wont warm up in the 10 minutes of idle compared to the 10 minutes of light driving you should do. The engine just does not warm up like petrols seem to do.

Just start up and go. Its the advice plastered all over TDIclub about these general things.

Similarly, on cold mornings (any morning, anytime, ever) when you want to have some heat in the cabin before you set off never bother starting the engine and leaving it there for 10 minutes to warm up. It wont.

    Start and go!

Start the car, drive off. Take it easy for the first and last few minutes of your journey. That's it.:)
