Lob Wedge

    I've been using my sand wedge from the edges of the green but would prefer something with a greater loft, so am thinking of buying a lob wedge. What degree wedge would people recommend, as I've seen many variations of them.

    forget about it imo,get a gap wedge @52 deg's,i recommend the new Callaway Jaws,it's flawless and lovely weight,if it's not high rough why would you need a lob,rule 1 for me when chippin,get it rolling on the green asap

    Cheers for the advice. I presume the lob wedge is a far higher degree loft than the gap wedge? What would I be aiming to do with a gap wedge from inside 50 or 60 yards, lob it onto the green or bump and run it?

    gap wedge you would be hitting it fairly low from 60 yds, couple bounces and if you play it well then it will check up nicely. if you go for a lob wedge never go more than 60degrees, its just not necessary

    as previous poster said,personally i'd use 56 deg for that distance




    normal lob is 60 deg's,i use my gap for all shots around the green once it's not deep in which case i would use my 56 or 60,i also use it for shots of 90-100 yards,hit my pw 110,normal sw 80 so that's why it's handy for me to have a gap wedge

    64 degree. Great out of bunkers and great if you short side yourself.

    A lot of the pro's in interview's for advice to amateurs is to only use the lob as a very last resort. A seven iron hop and run will be closer more times out of ten than a lob wedge. Too easy to mess it up. Sure every week you see a handful of pro's hitting from the rough 3 foot off the green and only getting it a foot forward, and these are the pro's! Gives us all hope.

    +1 to that. The lob wedge is really best used to get out of trouble, unless you've grown up with using them IMO. They're fairly tricky to learn how to use effectively. With a bit of practice there isn't really a short game shot that can't be just as easily played with the 56 degree wedge.

    In Golf Digest's Hot List a couple of years ago one of their tips/pieces of advice was that a lob wedge causes more trouble than good and I reckon thats not too far off the mark.

    Having said that feel free to try one out, everone's different and you may well like it.

    Just my own opinion FWIW.
