    Hi Guys,

My PS3 is showing a grainy image when playing blue ray.
I changed my tele to a LG a few months ago as far as i remember it was ok on my last tele, could it be contrast settings?

    All games are fine though??
    Any help would be great.

    Thanks,

    Ian

Is it all your Blu-Rays? Not all films are crystal clear in the first place! If it's a general problem though, there are quite in depth calibration tutorials on a number of discs, such as the Disney Pixar or BBC ones. If you can get a hold of something like Up or Life, throw them in and the software will guide you through getting the most out of your setup! Or another helpful poster might steer you in the right direction - personally I'm unsure what the issue might be if games are fine. I'm guessing you're using HDMI? I know component video looked inferior to other connections on my LGTV.

is your TV 1080p Full HD? Most games run at 720 but most Blu Rays run at 1080p so that may be it.

Well because of the way Green Zone is shot it's going to be very grainy no matter what. It's not to do with the blu-ray player, it's the way the film is actually made.

The Pixar movies should eb a good test as those blu-rays aren't made from a film print but are completely digital as far as I know.

    This.

Many Blu Rays do have that grainy look (Green Zone, Black Hawk Down etc.)
But if digitally animated movies like UP are grainy then there's a problem.

Other high quality films to try other than animations would be Superbad and Dark Knight. Both have very clear picture especially Superbad.

I'm fairly sure there's a calibration tutorial on the Up Blu-Ray, which is why I'd recommend it (as well as being a superb film and pristine transfer!). Definitely run that if you're having issues - it will help you tweak your settings to get the most out of it. I'll double check it's on there later.

Most TVs come with a very bad setup out of the box, try searching on avforums.com for your model of TV, they will often have recommended settings to try. If not the standard things to do are to turn off any type of image processing or effects the TV may have, also turn the brightness down a lot and if there's backlight settings turn that way down too. When you do, give it a bit of time to get used to the picture before changing it again.

When I finally made the push and went HD last xmas, i too noticed a grainy image on my blu-rays first time , and it bugged the hell out of me, until a friend suggested like "johnny_ultimate" just said calibration tutorial, my TV had a calibration section, and it sorted the problem perfectly.

And yes, not all blu-rays are great. But there making them better, like when they released Predator on bluray it was grainy in places. But the new released Predator Ultimate has been cleaned up.

    EDIT:
Being that I have a bluray player I never bothered using the PS3 for blurays, i just had a look and chose Green Zone, on the PS3 its all grainy, but on my philips bluray player its perfect quality.

Just checked and there is indeed a calibration tutorial on Up (go to setup > maximize your home theater). Didn't make a lot of difference for me, but if you're concerned about quality running it certainly can't hurt.

Hey guys got UP and made a difference. But should i just change for PS3 and buy a blue ray player???

you have to understand that the PS3 is 4 years old, when it was made blu-ray was young. When blu-ray won the battle against HD DVD in 2008, all the resources and latest technology went into making blu-ray players, so a blu-ray player is far superior to a PS3, so the video and sound quality is far better on a bluray player. And i know that as i have a PS3 and a philips bluray player and if i try out discs played in each; the philips player is just mind blowing and the PS3 although good is lacking.

The ps3 is fine for BluRays. It is a reference player, and has plenty of oomph to decode audio and video properly. There are a couple of better players out there such as the oppo BDP but you are not going to notice that generally.

OP, do NOT use greenzone for determining graininess. It was mastered with a large amount of noise (i.e. it is meant to be like that), so much so that the AVFForums reviews almost reckon you should buy the DVD version instead.

Get any Pixar animation and see if it is still grainy.
