As most of us have found out the battery for the Desire is basically not fit for purpose.

Just wondering if anyone has bought the extended battery and if so is it effective and what would you recommend?

I easily get 2+ days of normal use out of mine now, couldn't be happier. It is miles better than my wifes 3GS for battery life.

Mine has improved dramatically over time, 18 hours is perfectly acceptable IMO.

Did FroYo increase battery life? I haven't really noticed. Always found it fit enough for purpose though, tbh. As much or more than my old 3GS.

I don't use task killers or cpu limiters or anything and aside from maybe the first few weeks of usage (where I couldn't keep my hands off the thing) it's just not been an issue.

I also suspect the battery takes time to 'warm up' after you first buy it. I think I'm getting more out of it now (Froyo or not) than I was in those first few weeks. Could be the usage but I think it's more than that.

I'm not a very heavy user, but 4 - 6hrs max is all I get.

Something terribly wrong there. Check whats using your battery in about phone.

There could be an app preventing the phone going into sleep mode. The new Facebook app did this and I had to uninstall it. There has been a fix for this as of today. Do you have bluetooth on? Do you always have WiFi switched on?

I don't use Facebook at all. Bluetooth permanently off, gps off and Wi-fi off except when I'm using it and when I do it literally eats the battery.

4-6 hours is really really bad, I've gotten ~6 hours while constantly running the GPS (which really kills the battery). I constantly leave WiFi and 3G on and use the device a fair bit and I usually get 2 days out of it.

Do you use the built in email client (not the gmail one - the one that can connect to IMAP) as I've heard that that can be quite hard on the battery.

As Inquitus suggested go Menu -> Settings -> About Phone.
Click on Battery and then Battery use and see whats using the battery the most.

    The last time I looked it was somthing like;

    Android System 26%
    Cell Stand By 21%
    Phone Idle 20%
    Screen 7 %
    Wi-FI 20%
    Calls 2%

    Other small bits and bobs.

Thats a whopping 75% usage for nothing !!

    Try this.
Dial this code *#*#4636#*#* It will bring into a menu. Select Battery history.
On the the top drop down menu select Partial wake usage
It may show if there is a program keeping the phone awake.

    For comparison, my usage screen..

17h 41m since unplugged... with 53% battery remaining!

    Call Standby -- 31%
    Wi-Fi -- 30%
    Phone Idle -- 30%
Android System -- 7% (big difference there!)
    Display -- 2%

As a matter of interest whats the difference between Cell Stand By and Phone Idle... is that not the same bloody thing?

I think and somebody else might correct me but:
Cell Stanby is the amount of battery used by the signal radio.
Phone Idle is the amount of battery used while the phone is idle.

I did this and android system is using 42% of my battery,is there any way I can reduce this?
I charge my desire every night and never get a full day out of it,I always have to charge it again during the day..

Download "Spare Parts" app. Click on Battery history and select Partial wake usage. Click on Android System and it may tell you what is running.
