milk pastureiser

    Any dairy farmers here pasturise yere own milk.Thinking of buying one,seems mad buying milk from supermarkets when i could be drinking my own.

    I drink the milk from my own cows - unpasteurised.

    Rachel Allen was on the radio last year and she seemed in favour of unpasteurised milk once the herd health was fine.

    We were raised on milk from the tank and It never did us any harm but I'd be afraid to give it to my own kids now without pasteurising it. Our cows in the 80s were practically organic. Nowadays there's a dose for everything and you don't know what the long term effects are. But that's just me. If I was still milking and very sure of my herd's health, i might use milk straight from the tank.

    I saw many cats and birds going round in tanks where they had fallen in, we never had time for tea at those houses :o...

    I think it would be best to pasteurise...

    i think where there are young kids without a doubt it needs to be pasteurised ... my ma always pasteurised our milk when we where young

    Hi Min,

    You probably know as much or more about it as Rachel Allen does, I certainly wouldn't think that she has any basis for an airy dismissal of a measure that has had huge positive impacts on public health. She is good at what she does, but I wouldn't think much of her knowledge outside that, if this quote is accurate.

    Herd health is always "fine" - till it's not, and you don't want to be the canary in the coalmine. Serious illness in families drinking raw milk is sometimes then the first signals of an outbreak of salmonellosis. E. coli 0157 has gone out of the headlines, but it still exists.

    Pasteurisation is not some kind of big-brother nanny-state bureaucratic imposition on us - it's just a well proven way to massively reduce/eliminate the burden of harmful bacteria and viruses.

    As far as the OP's post is concerned, I think home pasteurisation kits are better than drinking it raw, but it is very hard to tell if they are working properly. You can get a sample tested, like the creamery do with each batch they pasteurise, but on sensible cost grounds you're not going to do that for every batch.

    Like herd health, if it breaks down, how can you tell?

    We heat the milk under moderate heat to 72 degrees for 16 seconds in a tefflon saucepan, then immeadiately cool it to 4C .

    We use a digital electronic thermometer (got it on ebay) for a few euro.

    Then we put it into the freezer until it's nearly frozen, and then into a 4C fridge.

    The process takes no time once youve done it a few times, and you end up with properly pasteurised milk

    The only problem to solve is to find a cheap way to homogenise the milk...

    I feel like the odd one out here but weve drank our milk straight from the tank all our lives. And in the winter when the rest are dried off we keep one cow specially for drinking but i always hated if she went dry though couldnt stand the carton milk :( But the way the testing is gone now the milk in the tank could be nothing but perfect for drinking any cow that has been given anything is milk last and given to bull calves
