Cross-Border Work

    Hi everybody.

My husband and I are getting ready to set up a "handyman" type business near the border. I'm assuming that if we set up the business in Ireland, he can only do business in Ireland, not in the North. Is that right?

In order to operate in both places, will we need to register a business in both Ireland and the UK?

Will we need to keep the income separate and file two tax returns, one in Ireland and one in the UK?

    Thanks for any help. :D

He doesn't need to set up new business in North.

Assuming he is tax resident in Republic he will be liable to tax in Republic on his worldwide income.

He may also be subject to UK tax on any profits earned if he has a "permanent establishment" in the North.

Cross border transactions also impact on VAT. I think you will need to speak to an accountant to get a summary on all tax issues for cross border business.

    Thanks for that.:D

I've contacted an accountant for advice. This could get a bit tricky, since I'm an American and Uncle Sam will also require a return regardless of where I live.
