Hi guys, recently installed ubuntu 10.04 on a netbook and my desktop, and loving it so far. However, I'm having a problem with my sound on the desktop. It was working 100% perfectly until this evening, when I downloaded suggested updates from the software update package. After the reboot, my sound is not working at all, and when I try to access alsamixer from the terminal i get this:
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

I've tried uninstalling alsamixer to reinstall but the same thing happens each time... Does anyone have any ideas?

You could try and run alsaconf to configure your sound card...

    sudo alsaconf

Thanks eightcell, I tried a few things, and turns out my soundcard had stopped being recognised. I did a clean install of alsamixer from a new kernel ( I think- still 100% up with t he unix lingo!) and managed to get it working.

It was quite satisfying when I heard the drums on the last restart!!
