Maintenance grant for MA?

    Hi all,

I am just about to begin my final year of undergrad so I am starting to think about applying for an MA. However, I am very confused about what funding I might be eligible for if I were to apply.

I am currently getting the full HEG maintenance grant with top-up from Mayo co co. I know that I could get my MA fees paid for (up to just over 6000), but I am confused about two other things.

    1. Would I have to pay the 1500 registration fee or would the state pay it for me?

    2. Would I be able to get a maintenance grant during the masters, and if so, for how much?

I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me out, thanks! :)

You will get the full amount plus top-up unless your income (or your parents income if living at home) has changed just like undergraduate. Even if your income has changed some county councils do not recheck your income but I'm not sure is it the same with all of them. I'm also not sure about the registration fee, even if you do pay I think you get a refund after Christmas at the latest, best to give your county council a call though.

I don't think there is a separate registration fee with some colleges - if there is you may end up having to pay it yourself because the grant will only cover upto €6500 fees

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Sorry just to clarify - yes you can get a grant but I know with UCD for example The tuition fees and registration fees for masters are not separated out, so check this with your college

    Ugh bureaucracy!...

I know that as an undergrad who receives the grant I am currently exempt from the reg fee. As I have never had to pay it before, I don't know much about it.

I am presuming that as a postgrad, I will no longer be exempt???

I thought that the two would be separated though, as the reg fee is charged by the government and the course fees are charged by the college...

There is no reg fee for postgrad -- at least, there wasn't one for UCC.

OP you should get the same maintenance grant again! I'm pretty sure it also covers the fees as well but what college are you in?

Are you sure of this??? My understanding is that neither fees nor grants maintenance is an option if studying a postgraduate Masters outside of Ireland or Northern Ireland. If it is being studied in Ireland, either north or south of the border, then grant maintenance would be available, but fees would not be paid because a postgrad. is considered as a second run through the education system, and the State has already paid the fees for your undergraduate degree.

Have I got that wrong? I didn't think they they'd pick up the fees tab for a postgrad???

From what I've read, mostly from this forum. If I'm wrong I'd be grateful if you could set me straight.

    Cheers

If you qualify for the grant then the fees up to X amount are paid.
Read the fees section on studentfinance.ie

That would be great, I hope you're right. I'm just going into my final year in TCD. I will soon be applying for a Masters course in and around Dublin.

@BrendanMG - I think that the "second run" that you are referring to only applies when someone is repeating a year and therefore the state won't pay. AFAIK the state will pay for fees (up to 6500) and give the maintenance grant (if the student qualifies under the means test).

However, I am as yet unsure as to whether or not I will have to pay the registration fee. @Yag reuoY I hope you're right, that would be great!

Thanks guys for helping me out :) Uisce

Yes this is wrong - you can get a maintenance grant which will pay your fees up to 6.5k and a certain amount of maintenance

By my reading of this there is NO registration fee just a student centre and USI levy
