    I remember this so well!

There was a character in it I could never figure out if it was male or female. I gathered it was female in real life but playing the part of a male (because the other characters would refer to him/he). The name was Masaka Natsume which didn't help to differentiate which sex he/she was!

Oh, I found her wiki page

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masako_Natsume

She was female, and a stunner too - but sadly died at the age of 27 from Leukeamia!

Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy and Tripitaka !
@kelle: so tripitaka really was a girl; if only that information could be sent back in time to the 1980s :-D

This show was compulsive viewing for me as a kid - it was on BBC2 right after Harold Lloyd.
But I saw a clip recently and it was incomprehensible gibberish!

Channel 4 started showing it again late at friday or saturday night about 3 or 4 years ago. All the stoners and slightly drunk use to watch it at 3am! Apparently it brought a new level of "understanding" to the show.

What I most remember was it being shown on a Friday evening - no school till Monday!

Actually I saw an extract from it years later and thought it was strange - I fully understood why my dear father called it "a load of bo****ks" at the time!
