I was thinking of going to Canada on a work visa next year. I've heard nothing but bad things from USIT so was thinking of cutting out the middle man and applying for a visa directly through the Canadian embassy. Has anyone done this before and how long was it until they got their visa?

You can't apply for the working holiday visa through any other company.

You may be able to apply for skilled migrant visa or seasonal work visa. These options generally require you to have work lined up.

edit: about usit. I applied to usit. I really have nothing bad to say about them. Their process moves very fast. When you sign up you need to pay within 2 days, give them all the requirements within 30 days, and then book your flights and travel insurance within 7 days of your authorisation permit being issued.

If you cannot afford to pay for your insurance and flights upfront, usit will reserve your place if you agree to book through them and pay them a deposit. Otherwise, there is a chance your work permit will be cancelled and your place given to someone else if you cannot adhere to the deadline.

In the past usit seemed to have railroaded customers into booking their flights/insurance through usit. This is no longer the case. They won't even charge you a fee to use alternative flights or insurance. Just make sure the insurance meets their minimum requirement. I used backpackertravelinsurance.ie. Many of the bully tactics you read seem to be instigated by their sales staff. I'd imagine the canadian embassy told them to stop charging a fee for booking alt flights/insurance.
