Simple question, does anyone know how many practicing doctors there are in Ireland?

    Medical Council statistics page

It's kinda hard to know exactly how many are practising clinically as some on the register may be retired, working part-time, in academia or in other non-clinical roles. Also people who go abroad temporarily may stay on the register - I checked the name of a friend who is doing a fellowship in Boston and he is on the specialist register.

This is a very important question, which the HSE really does not have a handle on, and are frankly incompetent for not knowing.

Problem is the waves of Irish doctors leaving these shores because Terms and Conditions are simple not attractive enough. We are rapidly heading into quality and quantity melt down.

There will probably be quite alot more in the future because more routes of entry have opened up into medicine. Precise numbers would be difficult to say.

More doctors, but not more jobs (less in fact with the Minister's plans).

As of Jan 1st 2010, there were 2373 people on the trainee specialist register.

Is this all the recognised training positions in Ireland?

It probably overestimates the number of positions as some of these will be doing research and not be in a service provision job.

Fairly close though. There are reports of 250-260 NCHD vacancies but I suspect there are non-training positions

Something really doen't add up here, from the same page (lonestargirls link above) There were 691 people in intern positions. So almost 700 people a year who should beginning specialist training which lasts from what, 6 to 8 years? And there are only circa 2400 people in training?

I suspect there are people still on the general register who should be on the trainee specialist register. I found 2 friends on the general register who I know are SpRs.

I'm a pharmacist so I know all about minister manglers "plans" which I can only presume she concocts via tarot cards and dice rolls.
