Looks like Brendan O'Connor has been give the saturday night chat show slot by RTE, for some reason...

I can't stand O'Connor, can't imagine that there are many people out there who actually like the man and would watch him on television.

Get the feeling he got the slot due to good numbers the first time he hosted.
I would think numbers fell sharply after that though.

Absolutely detest him, I hope the show bombs, hard and fast.

Another thing on that list though is "Reeling in the Years", I like to watch it sometimes with my granny and her telling me about when some of those things happened. Funny now that it's being done for the "Noughties" and that I'll be able to remember most of the stuff that happened. :D

Yeah, thought i had misread it when i saw it first. I saw him present that apprentice after show on tv3 and thought he was absolutely awful.

yeah agree the apprentice show was just terrible
but i kinda liked him on the saturday night show
he was better than that other guy that took over from him anyhow.

I have to say I watched the apprentice show and the saturday night one, and I really like him! I must be one of the few :)

If I recall correctly (from the Phoenix) the numbers did fall once O'Connor took over for his 'turn.'

I thought O'Connor did a reasonable job and handled some tricky situations like keeping David McSavage under control when he was about to run amok on the issue of abuse of children and the church.

However, who knows what the RTE selection process is really like and what the other variables were here.

Personally, I think Brendan's cut of the jib would have made him a fine presenter for Operation Transformation, though I believe Kathryn Thomas could end up there.

RTE need to cut costs, BOC needs a steady earner as he has openly advertised he is in negative equity. I think RTE may have had the upper hand, "take it or leave it Brendan!".

I think this is good.. Sick of Tubridy and O'Callaghan fawning all over their guests, and Craig Doyle trying to catch a glimpse of himself in the the monitor.. Brendan is not brilliant but brings a bit of a edge to it... He can come out with anything.. and that makes for interesting TV.

I don't like the way that the others do things either, but there has to be someone better than that eejit to do it.

They should take better care of good Irish talent, that way maybe they wouldn't leave for Britain at the first chance.
Dara O'Briain should have been pushed more to the fore and given a bigger contract.

Would love to see a chat show hosted by him.

I read to the 5th post before I realised its Brendan O'Connor, not Brendan O'Carroll. Now O'Connor doesn't seem so bad.

The useless gits at the top in RTE are threatened by any gleam of talent and do their best to destroy it.

Dara O'Briain was treated like a joke by RTE. They've asked him back since but he's done with them and only delighted to tell them where to go.

I only realised it lately (after seeing him gig) but O'Briain is actually talented. It's a pity TV wastes him on being the restrained chairman on forced panel shows when he'd be far better suited to a Conan O'Brien-style show (just with random people, not movie stars)

It was awful though, so I didn't watch any of it after that.
Certainly won't be watching any of it.

    RTE chat shows are trash.
Anyone who is anyone would hardly want to go on them (except for Sam Jackson on the Late Late).

In fairness to BOC he was miles better than Craig Doyle. At least he didn't get the show. I actually found BOC to be quite good on this show (even though I didn't like him at all in his other gigs). The guests he had were pretty poor so he hadn't much to work with. I'd watch him before I'd watch Tubridy.

I believe Gerry Ryan was originally meant to get the gig.

Wouldn't have been a bad show with the right guests.

I enjoyed his show for some strange reason. It was cringe worthy and stupid sometimes but he was still better than that Craig Doyle.

High-powered RTE Exec "Hey, we need someone, devoid of humour, and with the personality of a brick, so's we can give the viewers what they expect"

Brendan O'Connor "I'm yer man, when do I start?"

    :(

Don't particularly like him, but I'd take him anyday before Craig Doyle.
Actually, I'd take anyone over Craig Doyle. I'll never understand why RTE ever gave that twat anything.

I like Brendan for some strange reason but I won't watch the show unless it's actually live - the time he had Barrymore on that show was cut to shreds.

I think it was only fair to Barrymore that they didnt show the two men in white coats carrying him out of the place... Was wishing at the time that Barrymore had gone on with Tubridy.. O'Connor handled it well enough, but it would have been fun to watch Tubridy squirm..

That's the problem. Ther'e a very slim chance of them getting good guests on, and even if they do, they'll be few and far between because The Late Late show will get the better guests. It'll just be the dregs of the RTE canteen.

The sad thing is, he probably thinks he is a brilliant singer.

    Westlife were too impressed anyway.

Would think Elvis is turning over in his grave.

About 12-13 years ago Doyle presented Tomorrow's World with Peter Snow and Philippa Forrester. He wasn't so bad back then, possibly because technological innovation interested him more than bland "personalities" so he forgot to be bored and smug for a little while.

Craig Doyle must be thinking to himself:

"They havent given the show to Brendan O'Connor have they?"
    They have
"They havent overlooked me for the position of presenter again have they?"
    They have..
"Does that mean I will be working exclusively with UPC for the next year"
    It does..

You're kidding? It would have been the Gerry Ryan show, full of pontification and his self involved smugness, regardless of the calibre of guest.

O'Connor at least has a personality and may be passable if he gains confidence in the role with a little less of his arrogance.

Is the book open on how many times Twink turns up?

Didn't watch him present this last year, but come on, the MACE ads alone should have ruled him out!:pac:

I really can't stand the opinion that he seems to have of himself, I read his front page article on the front of the Sunday Indo the other week, his ego is pretty nauseating.

Sorry but I have O'Connor got a show in part due to simulwatching threads "full of pontification and his self involved smugness" on boards.
