    Hi,

We've had freeview for ages.(old skybox,no card). Now I'm pondering getting a subscription to take advantage of SKY+ and its HD features. Got a leaflet in the door advertising this http://www.sky.com/portal/site/ireland/offers

TBH Im not bothered with the HD package as I think the freeview HD ones will be enough, right??

How have your experiences been dealing with sky and what packages did you get or more importantly, regret getting.

    Cheers for the feedback

    J

Would you not consider buying a Freesat HD receiver with PVR? Much like a sky+ box and it can receive and record the HD channels.

Ya I had considered that alright.

Pros: No subscription after initial payout
    Get the freeview HD channels

Cons: No option to get channels like discovery,Skysports etc.
What happens if yer box goes t1ts up?? After initial warrenty
Sky would just replace/upgrade I presume

Feel free to add to this list :p

I wouldn't worry about the box breaking, buy a good brand and it should last for many years. Also i'm pretty sure sky will charge for a replacement box after a year or so, they will charge you for the installer to call out to you at the very least!

LOL don't you just love the sky haters that appear when someone asks about getting sky installed. What if the op wants sky sports, and a few of the mixes such as discovery etc. I have sky for years and never had a problem.
The op can take advantage of the free month offer and get SkyWorld to try out the full range of channels before deciding what they want to keep. They already have FTA so know what that offers and obviously wants to get Sky,so recommending FTA to them is pointless-READ THE ORIGINAL POST.

You read the post, he said he was thinking about getting sky "to take advantage of SKY+ and its HD features."

And also "Im not bothered with the HD package as I think the freeview HD ones will be enough"

He was using a standard sky box so how is recomending a HD+ freesat box pointless?

He asked if the free HD channels would be enough. So that implies he may be interested in taking the HD pack and is wondering if it is worth taking. The questions the op asked are centred around what to subscribe to with sky.As I said if the op wants to get sky they should take advantage of the offer and try everything they offer before deciding what to stick with.Maybe they want sky sports?
A freesat hd pvr may be an option but it may not offer the range of channels the op wants.

    Great feed back guys.

I do love the "freeness" of freesat and have considered a HD pvr too. It's just that as was said, you've no discovery etc or sports. Sky is very tailorable too which is a plus.
I had thought you get the Sky+HD box for free but according the site that's only with a HD package subscription. That's kinda thrown me off a bit so I need to ring em up to see for sure.

Anyone know if I can get this package initially just to get free box and then un-sub??

I think I remember hearing that sky were only doing a HD box and getting rid of the SD+ box, so if you order sky+ I think you get a HD+ box. I might be wrong though!

There isnt a huge selection of FTA HD channels at present. Is it possible to connect more than one SDish to review european FTA HD channels?

As a Sky HD subscriber I think their service is very good (if not expensive).

The Sky+HD box is 49 euro WITHOUT HD sub plus 30 euro install.Check if a retailer is near you and go to them.Contacting Sky direct has some problems because if you get through to Scotland they don't seem to have a clue regarding offers for Irish customers and may try to charge you an extra fee of 37.50 if you haven't got a landline. With retailers here that fee is waived by most of them.

Excellent info Zerks an co. Think I'll go to a retailer alright. Easier to talk face to face and bargain so to speak.

Another point. How about contacting a private installer direct versus sky?
