Parking

I am starting in DCU as a mature student in September & I just took for granted that there would be parking like UCD. I got a letter inviting me to a mature student summer school & it gave details of a multi story car park, am I correct in assuming this is not free. I had planned on driving to DCU for the course but I think I'll be getting the bus if the parking is too expensive.

Parking in DCU is somewhat ridiculous. There's 2 student/staff carparks, but neither are particularly big considering the amount of students/staff. You really want to be there early or very lucky to get a space. They're also on opposite sides of campus, and to get from one to the other after finding one is full, you've to leave the campus, drive around the outside, and in the other entrance.

The multi-storey isn't exactly cheap, but it is probably the only place you'll get parked...

Damn that anyway, I had great plans to drive everyday. Looks like I'll be on the 109A so, I think that stops at the Collins ave entrance, at least it's close to the nursing building.

If you show up early enough, you'll get a space.

I know people who drove every day and never had a problem getting a place in the free car park.

You do need a student/staff card to get access to the free car parks though (definitely for Henry Grattan one, almost sure for the one behind library/Invent too), so if you haven't received your student card yet the multi-storey is probably the only option.

Unless things have changed, you can buy a 6-in/6-out card for the multi-story if you're a student, which isn't too bad...

€7 for the 6 in - 6 out ticket, hardly the end of the world or going to break the bank.

You'll get a spot in that once your in before 10am, and in the free once your in before 9am.

Plenty of free legal parking in the estates too.

Thanks for that, I think I'll drive so. Even if I end up in the multi story it still works out cheaper. According to the letter I received about the mature student summer school I can exchange my parking ticket for a 6 pass ticket so that works out cheaper than the bus anyway.

The only thing is that after 11, all the spaces in the multi might be gone, which leaves you with one of your 6in's wasted, and having to park outside.

Am I correct in assuming that the 6 in/out tickets are valid for 3 months? That's what the mature student summer school letter says.

I'm sure I'll be in well before 11 everyday, I'm doing nursing & I've heard from a 3rd year student that the course is practically 9 - 5 Monday - Friday. I'll probably be in a lot earlier than 9, I like to be early & organised :o

Three months yep, if you're in before 9, you would probably get into the free one most days.

Anyone know where you get the pass? Can I just drive into the multistory and get the ticket in there, or do I have to have it before I go in?

You drive in and when your leaving you go down to the parking staff and ask there.

It'd be handy if they got rid of that smashed/broken brown ford in the Grattan carpark. Would clear up one space at least. It's been there over 6 months now. There's about 5 cars there that haven't moved in months to be honest.

Wasn't one of Meg's posters about car-parking spaces? It'd be great if she could get them out for a start.

Always parked in the estate across the road from the nursing building. You learn quickly wheres good to park in there (although you may have to endure a few glares from the residents for parking outside their house). Again, really depends what time you're getting in at every day as the car park fills up quickly.

They probably all belong to Charlie Daly.

    Is that not pay-and-display?

The road behind the railing along the Ballymun entrance is another decent spot, though there are a few angry residents there too. No parking charges though.

Up by the Church isn't a bad spot either. 'Cept for that bloke in the Black Honda Civic who is the worst parker I've seen - if he ends up near ya, yer gettin' scratched.

The area directly opposite the business building is pay and display on Collins Avenue, but the estate directly opposite the nursing building isn't and it's a 30 second walk to the engineering building which suited me down to the ground given I'm an engineer. :D

Can't say I've ever come across the honda civic to be honest. I'll keep my eyes peeled if I'm ever back there :)
