Gas Bolier heating rads upstairs when switched to off

    Hi

Last night i noticed my rads upstairs were very hot. I have a gas boiler with a dial timer downstairs. I checked the dialler and it wasnt set to come on. The rads downstairs were all stone cold but every rad upstairs was piping hot.

So i tried switching the button to Off (as opposed to Timer) on the dial timer. This didnt make any difference. The boiler was making the usual noise it would make when the heating would normally be on. This stayed on all throughout the night and never went off. I turned off all rads except one and again this one rad remained on.

I have two thermastats (one on each floor) and there set to 23' celsius which has always being the case.

Anyone know what this could be.

Im thinking the boiler may need a service. I switched off the boiler this morning before leaving for work

Just another thing worth mentioning, we dont have an immersion (at least one that is connected)

Any ideas also on the average cost of a boiler service.

    Thanks in advance

So this is a new fault?

Motorised valve that controls flow of hot water to upstairs radiators could be stuck in the open position.

Time clock in my opinion is gone if boiler stayed on all night: I presume the rad that was left on is not near the stat

when the boiler is next on turn down the stats to see if the boiler cuts out.
Boiler service 80 to 120 depending on type

This is most likely the problem ,most valves control the boiler (if wired correctly.)

This suggests power goes through MV and boiler before the clock: just wondering is that normal as this configuration would require a separate power supply to keep the clock going , separate from the power to boiler.

    Just wondering what constitutes
    (if wired correctly.)

There is two methods of wiring motorized valves with an interlock ,non-voltage and voltage

In both cases the boiler will turn on if the motorised valve is manually turned on. The timeclock merely sends a live to the stats.

Interesting which is why I asked.

In this case then how does the householder shut down the system electrically when say going on holidays.?
    thanks

Best practice is to power everything from a fused switch ,located at the boiler.
