Hi, just wondering if anybody had a definitive list of the Par 3 golf courses in Ireland.

I have some friends coming over from Germany and Italy dreaming of playing golf in Ireland. They have graduated from Pitch & Putt, but would not be able for a full 18 hole course, so I was going to take them on a tour of Ireland's par 3 courses. :D:D

    The course I have found on the internet so far are;

Pucks Castle Par 3, Pucks Castle Lane, Rathmichael, Dublin
Jamestown Par 3 Golf Course, stepaside, Dublin
Burrow Par 3 Golf Course, Enniskerry Road, Stepaside, Dublin
Cardenton House Par 3, Cardenton House, Stradbally Road, Athy, Co. Kildare
Liffey Valley Par 3, Leixlip, Co. Kildare.
Ballymore Pitch & Putt , St. Owen's, Ballymore, County Westmeath,
Garrylough Golf Course and Driving Range, Garrylough, Screen, Co. Wexford.
    Ballinteskin, New Ross, Co. Wexford.
Blackwater Golf Course, Kilnew, Blackwater, Co Wexford
Abbey Par 3 Golf Club, Winningtown, Fethard on Sea, New Ross, Wexford.

    All feedback welcome.

If you're Northside, the Deer Park Par 3 course in Howth (12 holes, I think) was worth a go when I used play it - check hotel to see if it's still on the go!

If you're Southside, there a number of par 3 courses adjacent to the public gof course in Stepaside on the road to Enniskerry, but Marley is also worth playing

The Deer Park one is still open.

    St.Anne's Park Par 3, Raheny

I know Jamestown calls itself a Par 3, but you can get around with a wedge easily enough. Love the 11th there.

Just up the road from there is Step-A-Side Par 3. That's pretty decent.
And the Burrow isn't too far in the opposite direction.
Both good courses with a few holes to give your irons a swing.

if your touring with them and heading to west cork, just outside rosscarbery is a wonderful links par 3. 2 18 s. wedge and putter are all you need. set amongst the dunes. great fun.

Also Glen Mill off the N11. Never played there but looks like the Augusta of Par 3 courses in Ireland. :)

As far as I know Garrylough is closed although the driving range is still open.

There is also Rathaspeck par 3 on the other side of wexford town which was great but have not played there for about 15 years. Think he has added some par 4s.

Blackwater is great and only €10 a head.

Some cracking tight holes in it as well

Stepaside Par 3 Course. Decent course.

A good few of the "par3's" are really just pitch and putt, with no holes over 120yrds.

    Of the ones you mentioned:
Balheary, Swords - 18 holes par 3, pretty challenging, a lot of 140 - 180 yard holes with some upturned saucer greens.

Rathaspeck, Wexford - 18 Holes par 3, Im a big fan of this course, especially in its current layout. There are 3 par 4's, and lots of very good par 3s. The start is very pitch and putty though. Excellent value @ 12 euro.

Burrow, Stepaside - 18 Holes, par 3, ok course, usually v busy. Mostly pitch and putt, 2 150yard+ holes.

Willie Foxs Par 3, Glencullen - 18 holes, par 3, similar standard to Burrow. Nice views and great guinness in Johnny Foxs across the road.

Newcastle Par 3, Newcastle - 18 holes, par 3, some long holes. Looks pretty uninspiring - flat, featureless and open. Have never played it.

Have heard good things about blackwater in wexford and glen mill in wicklow.

Not forgetting Pucks Castle just up from Kilternan! One of the best Par 3s around. If money is no issue then Glen Mill IS the best.

Not sure why you say money no issue?
Glenmill is €15 for 18 holes and thats on a saturday.

played it regularly over the last few months and it still catches me out mind you the swing was in the poo last weekend and only got it back on the 14th.

The Slieve Russell hotel (Co.Cavan) has a par 3 course. Havnt played it but if its anything like the proper course there it will be very decent indeed.

Of the Wexford courses mentioned so far:

    Garrylough is closed
Ballinteskin is only 9 holes and is not much more than pitch and putt
Blackwater, Abbey and Rathaspec are all good courses. Good value and well maintained.
Also worth a visit is Carrigleade near St Mullins in Co. Carlow

I found Glen Mills great value for money!! Not much dearer then any other decent course around and this is way beyond decent. Loved it. Plus my Golf Balls got free swimming lessons! (water Everywhere)

Was in Glen Mills there yesterday. Tee off was at 10:00am. The place was fairly busy. First time there and I was ask my address and phone number for insurance reason!?

Course itself was good. Didn't play that well myself but have to say I did enjoyed it. Each hole offered its own challanges, e.g. Different elevation greens, bunkers, water, green sizes, trees, distance. Greens were all proper course size (not like pitch and putt), however the greens were full of drain holes. Hence we all had to putt harder to maintain the line and threw the green reading out a bit.

Also some of the tee boxes were a wee bit too close to the greens for comfort, luckily the group behind us obviously understand and were kind and professional enough not to tee off until were played.

By the time we were done, the place was almost empty with very few cars in the carpark. Oh, one more thing, it's more a personal perference. I hate having dirty shoes after a round of golf, and always look for an air-cleaner when I am done. There wasn't one.

Looked up the regulations for picth and putt courses.

Longest hole allowed is 90 meters and maximum lenght of 18 hole course is 1200 meters (so average 66/67 meters per hole).

So we it might be unfair calling some of the shorter par 3 courses pitch and putt.

Shortest hole in the Open rota is the Postage stamp at Troon, measures in at 112 meters.

I used to play all my par 3 golf in Scarke, New Ross. it was a great place for beginners. They used to have 27 holes and a range. I think they've extended to a full 18 hole par 72 now with a just a 9 hole par 3.

Those are the international rules. as set out by FIPPA (www.fippa.net)
In ireland, the longest hole is 70 Meters and total not being more than 1'000 meters (www.ppui.ie):cool::cool::cool::D

    Guys,

I'm not sure how relevant this thread is - it's a bit of a dinosaur.

What are the par 3 courses in South Dublin like?

I was thinking of Stepaside or Jamestown. Are either of these like proper golf course par 3s? Or are they just slightly long pitch and putt holes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,356 ✭✭✭NeVeR

I've played Stepaside a few times..( playing it tomorrow )

There are some small holes and some i'd used the 5/6/7 iron on.. there is also 1 -2 long holes where i'd break out the 3 or 5 wood ( maybe 3 iron depending on wind )

    I find it a great par 3.
