Quick question on NCT, front fog lights

    Hi,

I’m trying to organize my Nct shortly however my spot lights at the front don’t work. Does anyone know if I'll fail if these don’t work? I know you need by law a rear fog light but what if I don’t have any on the front?

    Thanks

Yep, if a car is fitted with front fogs, they are tested
    And must work.

No, they are not tested, and they don't have to work for the test.

NCT.ie says rear fog lights only will be tested if they are fitted

If the lights are there, they must be working.

I tested my car a month and half ago and the fog lights were not tested. I left them off on the dash and was hoping they would not be tested as the left didnt work.
He tested the main lights and never even looked at the fog lights. All he tested was rear fogs. This was in the Galway centre although i would assume all have same criteria.

    1. Where auxiliary lamps are found to be inoperative, this should not be considered a reason for failure.

    2. A broken glass on an auxiliary lamp or fog lamp is not a reason for failure unless the crack or break is large enough to insert a sheet of paper as used in the test.

I had my nct about 3months ago (not sure when the rules last changed) and going in i had a minor problem where sometimes the front fogs flicker or turn on themselves (switch problem). I had the car in for a service a day or two prior and asked the mechanic what to do.

He said that basically if they are there and work then they must comply with all criteria but if they don't then it doesn't have to (not a fail). His advice to me was to remove the fuse and then its no problem.

    Passed.

They do have to look okay i.e. no cracks even if they aren't working.

None of that link says "must be working"

Basically I got my car serviced and the dealer physically broke the switch I use to switch my lights on and I didnt realise it until it was to late. The problem is that my fog/spot lights come on and stay on now no matter if I have my parking lights or standard lights on. I just can’t switch them off!! So what I did was disconnect the wire behind the fog light bulbs. I can't get the time off work to get the switch fixed so that’s why I’m in this scenario

How do you know it was the dealer? If he broke it during a service besides being irresponsible he would be liable to fix it for free.

My car was tested yesterday, I watched them test it and they tested the front fog lights so I guess if they didnt work it would have failed.

Front fog light's are not required by law.
It his car and he decides if he want's to fix them or not.

TBH, as for 3 years driving in Ireland, I've seen conditions that front fog lights could be handy only once or twice. Even then they were not really helpful, because fog was not too dense.

Front fog light are very handy, when the fog is so dense, that you can see for only a couple of metres ahead or less. Then you turn fog lights, and turn off your dipped head lights, and then you can see what's in front of your car.
Otherwise they are useless. Even more - 25% of Irish drivers use them illegally on normal weather conditions.

    Before posting read the thread.
It was said already, that whether they are working or not, it's not a reason for fail. It's all in NCT manual.

if one is working the other has to work, but if the two are not working that's ok,and the glass on either is not cracked ,she should be ok.

    Ah Balls,

A stone took out half of the glass on one of my front fogs, (Lens and bulp work, but the glass cover is in shards.)

Off to ebay I go, so.

As a quick fix, as an inoperative fog alone is not cause for failure, but broken glass is, if I whack a bit of masking tape over the cracked glass would this work for passing?

The whole thread was about it.
    Did you read it?

BTW these are the reasons for fail while checking front fog lights:
    Incorrectly positioned
    Insecurely mounted.
    Switch defective.
    Not white or yellow.

I hope that should answer the question.

It should pass, I sheared a screw head trying to replace a bulb in mine back about 6 years ago, so I covered both with Duck Tape and it passed no problem.

Thank you. The thread had unfortunately gone off in a tangent and I wasn't sure what people were saying.

    Why? That makes no sense.

How much should a switch cost for fog lights?

Tested yesterday. I stuck clear headlight tape from Halfords over the cracked lense.

Front fogs were'n't even tested, a big N/A on the report beside both front and rear fogs :)
