just wondering if any one has had any prombles with steering in vw cars. I have a 06 jetta , and steering has failed, vw assessed car and said it is a major electrical fault within the steering column and it will cost 1500 to repair, its out of warrenty so they wont cover it. Should they cover it as it is a faulty part ??

I think that you'll get better advice in the Motors forum - moved accordingly.

why should they, no offence, but its a four year old car
things can go wrong, u cant expect VW to stand over everything for the life of the car.

Unless it is a common fault probably not a lot u can do

If it's out of warranty, you're out of luck. But do try an independent mechanic, they may be able to do the work for less.

And the bloody thread title has me singing the Wombles theme song in my head for the last 10 minutes.

Surely this is the same steering column fault that has plagued 05/06 passats for the last few years. I would get plenty research done & hit vw with the facts.

For your information OP, many steering columns have required replacing in the passats at a cost of almost 2000 at the dealer. I think in many cases this fault shows up (at first anyway) as a steering error light on the dash. If this is what you have, I would fight this one strongly if you have a dealer history with the car.

If you have a FSH it's worth a shot for goodwill. Probably wont get anything. It's a very common fault on them. My Leon was recalled for something to do with the steering but I dont know what exactly for. It's the same car underneath as the Jetta so I'd imagine the same electric system.

Do you mind me asking how the fault manifested itself? Was it just a warning light or was there a difference in the steering? I've had a fair few big problems with mine recently and am thinking of selling it might as I no longer have faith in it. That particular problem worries me as of all the common problems VAG cars show up it's the only one I havent had yet...and tbh I'm half expecting something else major to fail...
