First time waxing - help please!!

I'm hoping to go for my first wax next week! I've booked in for a bikini wax but I think its moreso a brazilian I'll need becasue there's a lot of growth down there and close to the bum etc also but I've heard for first time waxing a bikini is best just to get used to what do you think????

Any tips for first time waxing? I'll take nurofen 1hour before my appointment, what creams/oils etc should I use before hand and afterwards? Also is there a certain type of wax that some salons use that make it less painful?

I'm really nervous about it especially about baring all in front of a complete stranger!! Do i wear my own underwear or do they give me paper underwear? Should I just wear a thong incase I need a brazilian instead of bikini wax??

    Thanks for all your help

Awh there is NO need to be worried. You'll be fine. The beautician will have seen it all before there will be no shocks. I've went bare from the waist down, it doesn't take balls, noone cares.

Start off as you see fit and are comfortable with. After you get it done you'll be so pleased with yourself and result I promise.

I'm not sure if you wear paper undies for a brazillian but I wore my knicks for my bikini line and I've went bare for a hollywood (all gone). The beautician will ask you what you want and she will tell you what to do. Tell her it's your first time and she will explain all. It's quite a daunting experience when you first get it done!

I personally take neurophen about an hour before my appointment. I would wash down there but not use any oils or moisturisers as the wax will not stick to the skin and hair properly and you won't get a good wax!

I get my Hollywood done in Urban Wax. The only prep you need is to exfoliate the area to within an inch of its life for a day or two beforehand.

You won't be given paper knickers as you don't wear anything on your bottom half while having it done. No need to be self conscious, the therapists see a lot of fanjitas in the course of the working day so I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Don't bath or shower for 24 hours having it done as this lets the area calm down quickly and prevents redness or rashing. And no sex for about 48 hours (which isn't a big problem seeing as you can't wash properly lol;)), that included dildo use or any kind of friction.

Also try and avoid going to have it done in the days leading up to your period as this is the most painful time to get it done.

Overall relax, it's actually not that painful and you won't be able to help yourself from admiring it once it's done, lol

No need to worry. Had my first wax not too long ago and was super self conscious beforehand as I'm overweight and thought I'd look revolting!! But good news! It was fine!! I've never got so much as my eyebrows waxed before and I threw myself in the deep hand to get a Brazilian and it was fine. I didn't kick, I didn't scream, and I loved the feeling when it was done after. Nearly had to speed home to molest myself! [ I exaggerate!]

Miss Fluff [appropriate name!]: Just wondering about the Hollywood, is that waxing of the labia then also? Is that super painful?

My beautician recommended trimming the hair before you get waxed, I also take some nurofen. And afterwards i use aloe vera... Its a my miracle lotion.

I've never taken Nurofen or anything beforehand - there's no need. If you're going to Brazilia, it's not that painful. They use lots of oils so that it is not painful. I used to go to Urban Wax and it was quite sore. Then changed to Brazilia and I remember saying to the therapist "why doesn't this hurt as much?!"

Oh and if going for brazilian or hollywood, you don't wear any knickers down there - don't be embarrassed, they see it all day every day. And stripysocks85 - brazilian / hollywood = no hair at all whatsoever down there except for a landing strip for the brazilian, but other than that you are bare. So yes that includes labia (which is the sorest part of the waxing). I'm surprised though that you are asking this since you got a brazilian before, perhaps you didn't actually get a brazilian before, maybe a californian or something?

If you had a Brazilian before you would have your labia waxed also Stripysocks so sounds to be like you may have had an extended bikini was instead. A Brazilian is everything bar a tiny landing strip and a Hollywood is totally bear. No, its not sore. Although do avoid going in the days leading up to your period as I did before and it was quite painful.

^^ Yep defo avoid going anywhere around your period as your pain threshold is lower around that time.

Miss Fluff - I actually find getting my leg waxes as much sorer than brazilian / hollywood!! The part at the end of your leg near where it meets the foot, I find that sooo painful, but not so much the brazilian. Yes it is uncomfortable but it's not that much pain!

Thanks so much for all your replies.

I'm thinking now I need a Californian rather than a Brazilian. I just want a thin-ish vertical line going around the lips left but I need hair removed from the bum area so would a Californian be the correct style then?

Also theres a LOT of growth down below and on my upper leg also, what should I do with before I go to the salon?

^^ No. Only brazilian / hollywood remove hair from the bum area. A californian is just removing hair from bikini line and inner thigh.

If you just want a landing strip, then it's a brazilian - every other hair down there will be gone. If you want to be completely bald, then it's a hollywood.

You should exfoliate a few days before. Also, if there's a load of hair down there, you can trim it yourself before you go, otherwise the therapist can do it for you.

One last thing - make sure you haven't shaved or used any hair removal creams down there for about 2 - 3 weeks beforehand.

Oh and finally, sorry! I just keep thinking of extra things to say. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO A REPUTABLE PLACE!!!!! I cannot stress this enough - you hear of so many horror stories. I have only ever gone to Brazilia and Urban Wax, I would never consider any other place like a normal "beauty therapist" place. There's specialised training for waxing down so you need to be careful with who you go to.

Couldn't agree more. Make sure you are going to a decent reputable salon who specialise in fanny waxing. I got caught out once and once only by going to a regular salon in Dublin 4 for my Hollywood....still brings tears to my eyes. They BUTCHERED me, had a rash for about a week and all for the sake of saving €15 on the €60 I usually pay. It is a lot but well worth getting it done properly.

Hmm, the Californian I get removes everything down below but leaves a triangle rather than a landing strip. A quick google suggests it can be either - triangle with everything else gone, or landing strip with some hair left on the labia.

best to check with the salon to confirm their interpretation before booking!

actually I find the labia & bum painless, but the standard bikini line absolute agony. Agony. The hairs seem to have double roots or two hairs in one follicle or something!

Yah it can be a triangle or a landing strip, it's still just a small tuft of hair left there but everything else is gone. That's still a brazilian though ... the definition of a californian I got was from the brazilia website so that's how they interpret it anyway!

Yeah I see that now - based on their definition, what I get is a Brazilian basic. Sure it's all just made up names really!

OMG thanks for that guys, she said Brazilian to me as she mentioned the Californian beforehand but she said she'd try the Brazilian! Thought I was great! No wonder it only cost €35!! I feel cheated now! Can't say anything now though as she's a really good friend of a friend. Would like that hair off!! Dreading the pain though!! I wore paper knickers.

I myself am going to get waxed for the first time, I'm planning on getting a hollywood done but the thing is i have slightly large inner labia...
I'm extremely self concious about it and i don't know if that would effect having it done..would it be a common thing for the waxer to see?

Don't worry at all! Waxers have seen EVERYTHING and then some! Seriously, nothing to worry about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

^^ Exactly. They see all types of girls bits all day every day, they've seen it all already! So don't worry about it!

I'm with Twee & Tinkerbell, don't worry a bit. I was freaked first time but the waxer was soooo professional, nattered away and made me feel right at ease. Trust me, they've seen it all before!

Oh and wear super loose pants for after, like giant jersey jogging bottoms or such ;)

I got a waxing done in Brazilia a few weeks ago and was delighted with the results, I was really nervous going in and about an hour before hand i took a panadol, they are fab in there and don't bat an eyelid, don't be nervous going for your wax once you walk out of your wax you will feel great with yourself :);)
