in a 2001 fiesta zetec the cigarette lighter does not work. Would that be a fuse? It is not my car and the person does not smoke and only noticed when she went to plug in a car hoover. She has car 6 months so nop way of knowing if it was ever working while she has it

I tried the lighter itself with the engine on and off and it does not heat at all?I also tried the hooover and a phone charger, not a geeks?

If anyone can help be obliged

    Sounds like the fuse.

Depends on how old the car is. I had a problem with my 10 year old focus. It turned out there was "dirt"/Corrusion on the contacts inside of the socket. Bit of a clean and was sound.
    Most likely fuse though.

There could be crap on the terminals inside the lighter.
I dont know what the feck was at mine. I can only assume the kids of a previous owner filled it with crap.

EDIT - totally missed the 2001 part ;)

I assume the hoover gets its power via the cigarette lighter?
I had issues with everything that got power from the lighter socket. GPS, Phone charger. Sometimes if you fiddled with the connection you might get it to work, jiggled it around etc....
In the end "cleaning" the terminals resolved the issue.

Service manual for that year or try to download a PDF fuse diagram. I had to do same for am early Transit

When you pull down the glove box to get access to the fuse board there is a fuse layout diagram on the back of the glove box.

if you go cleaning the terminals or the inside of the socket, make sure ignition is off, otherwise youll be replacing the fuse too!

    UPDATE

Thanks all for the feedback. It was the fuse. I replaced the fuse and all is go. In case anyone with a similar issue finds this on a search:

The main fuse board is under the steering and slightly to right. It should lift out by pulling underneath according to book but i had to gently prise around edges with a scredriver.

It is the first fuse on the left on the bottom row. Colour blue and is a 15...., 15 what? amp is it? Anyway Blue and 15.
