Installed Ubuntu on a creaky old laptop over the weekend, which has given it a new lease of life and so far i'm liking it....

However I've noticed that if i put a file onto a USB stick and then delete it again, i cant put anything else back on.

Even though the drive folder looks empty, the properties say theres 500MB on it or whatever.

As i said i'm totally new to this OS so any help would be appreciated

You've to empty the recycle bin after you delete it. Or use shift-delete to delete the file without sending it to the recycle bin.

Just a general note which might help you along. The recycle bin in Ubuntu is a folder named .trash (the full stop in front means it is normally hidden, and it will be on the drive). So if you brought your usb key to a windows machine just delete the files in this to free up the space.

You can also script trash handling if you like: install package trash-cli and run command empty-trash. It takes an optional parameter for trash age e.g empty-trash 7 cleans out things deleted a week or more ago.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.
