I got my friend an ipod and i want to copy all my music onto his as well.

Just wondering if someone could talk me through this please. I would really appreciate it.

Ok, assuming all your music is only store on your ipod (?) and assuming you're using a Windows computer getting your music back off your ipod takes a few steps.

But before I go into it could you confirm the above? (if you are using Windows, what windows is it - xp, vista, 7?)

    Ok.

    1. Connect your ipod to the computer you want to transfer the songs to.

    2. Open "My Computer", your ipod should appear as a drive, open it.

    3. Now you need to enable hidden file viewing
    |----In your ipod window click on the "Tools" option, from the drop down menu that appears select "folder options" (a new window will open), in the new window select "view", the 6th item down on the list should be "Hidden folders/files", you want to show these.

    4. In your ipod window you should see a folder labelled "ipod_control", open it, in here there should be a music folder that contains a bunch of other randomly labelled folders - that's your music.

    5. Transfer the hidden music folder to your computer.

All your music will be named strangely, but this is easy to fix as all the tagged info is still there within the files themselves, you can use itunes, or mediamonkey or some other bit of media organising software to rename your files.

Thanks for the reply, however the first step has thrown up a problem. My Ipod doesnt show up under my computer when it is connected.

    Any advice?

    Thanks very much.

Ah!, you might need to go into itunes (with ipod connected) and enable manually syncing & enable disk drive in the ipod tab. I'm not sure if changing this setting will erase your music or not, but I don't think it will (and if it would itunes would warn you before hand)

Yes, it'll allow your ipod to be seen in "My Computer" as a drive, you'll still have to go through the steps I outlined earlier to get your music off the ipod.

    I'll try.

    Open itunes.

    Select ipod.

The first screen you see should be the ipod "Summary" page

At the bottom of that screen you want to tick the two boxes that say "Manually manage music" and "enable disk use".

Click any other tab, like music, video, podcast, to save these settings.

*I haven't used the newer versions of itunes so some details may have changed, but on the whole itunes hasn't changed in the last 7 years so I doubt too much will be different.

Thanks but, it came up that all my music would be replaced by what i is in the itunes library. Which isnt very music. Thanks anyway.

    Awh, that sucks!

Maybe yamipod will work for you? * I don't like recommending this type of software as they usually cause some sort of file errors...like track corruption, missing files, general randomness...but it doesn't seem like you have many options.
