Google.ie: why have they removed the 'pages from Ireland' function?

I don't know if I'm the only one bothered by this but until recently you could search Google.ie for Irish pages alone simply by ticking 'pages from Ireland'. This was obviously really helpful in narrowing search results to the area you wanted.

This summer Google has removed it. Does anybody know the logic behind this move? Is there any other search engine which offers this function?

    Thanks.

    Google.ie

I think after you search it then gives you an option on the left for 'Pages from Ireland'.

    /edit yes it does.

It's at the side of the page now is it not?

I'm on my mobile atm,so can't double check.

Because all that is showing up is " Ireland is Sh!te" threads from Boards. I think the tourist board must have had thenm do it.

I think it orders the search results so that Irish ones come first, unless it's a specificaly well known entity.

for example, if you search for "books" it gives you a list of Irish sites. If you look for "hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" it gives you the most popular searches for it and then lists Irish sites.

I think that's the way it works.

Fairly sure it gives the ones most clicked in Ireland, not necessarily Irish sites, and since so many people here have taken up Chrome they have a nice big information pool now. :pac:

Good spot. So with the new change they're basically now asking us to do the same search twice just to narrow it to Pages from Ireland. Seems a bit user unfriendly and inefficient. They must be earning income from each additional hit on the website or something.

It's the same with Google UK, it's not just Ireland...before someone trots out the 'Only in Ireland would something like this happen...' chestnut. :)

Worse than that, it's also gone from Google Universe.

We'll have to start negotiating with Bing.

Yeah, I'm set in my ways

I didn't like it when they redesigned the BBC or www.nfl.com
NFL changed in the last few weeks, why change it??

    Never like change :(

Is it my imagination or has my ability to have my search finished also been ended? For example in Search Settings I have always ticked 'Do not provide query suggestions in the search box.' under Query Suggestion at the bottom of the page as I don't need Google to propose a load of random word suggestions when I'm writing in the search box. However, before this summer it would always still allow the 'auto complete' function of words I had already searched so I didn't have to keep writing them each time I wanted to make a search.

Now each time I search for something I have to write the entire search, even if I have searched for it numerous times before. Any way to change that back?

    Is this it?

Yeah, that's it but now it only comes up as an option after you've made a search; prior to this you could make a single search by clicking 'pages from Ireland'; under the new changes you have to search twice to achieve the same end.

The uk one is the same, maybe they have already done that to save you from pushing that button.

If you go to google.com, it will redirect you to google.ie or whatever country your IP is located so you'll get mainly Irish pages anyway. they're just making it more intelligent really.

Depends on the search term you use.

Ahhh, sure you're always on your mobile.

Sometimes I think you don't have a home to go to at all and have fallen on hard times down in that city-less county you migrated to.

If anyone sees a woman sleeping rough on Shop St, with just a mobile phone for company, give her a boot in the hole .. :p
