Problem connecting the above in castleconnell, Limerick (pointing at woodcock) watched the tvtrade instruction video, only on my aerial there is 2 connectors on aerial under cap. (only one on video) Not sure what to do?

I connected core cable to one connector under cap, should i have connected the screen to the other side

Getting no signal, is a clear line of sight required?

    Any advice much appreciated?

    Cheap aerial missing a balun...

strip coax back about 2" or 3.5cm. Use piece of outer as 1.5" or 3cm cover/insulator for screen after you twist it to make a wire same length as inner core.

Now you have a "pair" of wires to connect to the two terminals. Having the two longer "tails" works better on those kind of aerials rather than the short connection that should be used on a decent aerial with built in Balun (Blakes, Triax, Herschmann, Katherine). Electrical Wholesalers here often stock very poorest kind of aerial.

Anyhow, connected as I described it should be perfect.

Where did you get this aerial? Are aerials without baluns really still common?

    Sadly yes.

Aerials with Baluns have ALWAYS existed side by side with cheap ones that cost costs. About 50c saving!

I've got a triax grid aerial - the flat one with the four bowties in front.
It has a pcb balun. When i checked it the pcb connections to the dipole are via a nut and bolt at each end. Presumably the bolt provides some kind of direct connection but it looks like it might be a bit unreliable.
The pcb at these points has a lacquer covering, does that mean it's designed to connect capacitatively, or should the track at these points physically connect to the aerial itself? Would it work better with the lacquer scraped off?

I'd say it's fine, but you'd never know with Triax!

Everything now works the finest, reception not perfect but will do, got the 4 channels

    thanks for the advice

Just wondering does woodcock transmit DTT signal, if i had the correct tuner would i pick up the digital signal?

Yes it does. No TV3 yet.

But wait till there are Saorview logo tuners available.
End Oct 2010 (Start Nov 2010) is soft launch. Mid to late 2011 is the earliest you want to think about getting a set box. Maybe even Nov 2011 to Feb 2012.

I'd be surpised if TV3 is on DTT 1st Nov 2010 (though you never know) and surprised if Analogue Woodcock hill is turned off before mid to end 2012. I suspect January 2013 will be the start (rapid though) of Analogue Switch Off.
