If you are looking to unlock your iPhone 4, or previous versions of the iPhone - search ultrasnow in cydia (requires a jailbroken device)

If no packages are found, add the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository.

    This unlocking method supports iPhone 4 baseband 01.59 and 3G/3GS basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04.

ah funny how things have changed with the iphone on multiple networks. Couple of years ago this thread would have been pages long even after a few hours!
I might avail of the unlock but I'm in no hurry..... bit of a non-event really!

I just added it about 5 mins ago, it struggled to find a signal at first (i'm with three) normally havnt had a problem with signal (i panicked) but gave it a few mins and a reboot, after a reboot it seems to be behaving itself
will keep an eye on it and update, p.s also havnt been able to test if its unloced as I have no access to a non 3 micro sim! so i guess i'll update when I can!

Yeah, same thing happened to me - upon first reboot It struggled to find a signal but after a restart it found it instantly, I presume it's just a one off while it configures itself.

I'm going to shave down an o2 sim today to fit, and I'll post reports ;] (I'm on three also)

Do keep us posted - on many other forums theres a lot of talk about battery life down after the jailbreak. One guy leaving iphone 4 on all night normally drains 10% of battery - after the jailbreak it was down 20% in standby mode

Any chance you could give a bit more information with your answer?

Not being smart just don't understand why.

You just can't. You have always needed to jailbreak before unlock so you can get the necessary software on the phone. If you want the technical answer you need to ask one of the team that do the unlocks/jailbreaks.
