apps not working when 3g drops back to edge

I'm on O2 and have noticed on my last few phones that certain apps (on android and symbian) wont poll properly when the signal drops back from 3g (or hspda) to edge twitter apps wont' work, foursquare wont work stragely email still (sorta) works I would have thought data is data but ... just curious if anyone else has the…
