Using an African Drum as an end table

I bought 2 African drums in Ghana when I was over there. I don't do much drumming, but they're quite nice pieces and I'm thinking of bringing them to my apartment and sticking a lamp on top of one of them. They're doing nothing where they are, but I still would like if they could still function as a drum in five years time in case I'm in a parade or something. The big one is great quality. Cost €50 over there. A little bigger than the one below (Pardon the size - feels funny saying that outside of a bedroom setting)

Does anyone see their drumming capacity decreasing if I stick a big ol' heavy lamp on top of it or something? Anything I can buy to preserve its drumming quality under a weight?
